Nicolae Testemiteanu

Nicolae Testemițanu (1 August 1927 in Ochiul Alb, Drochia district – 20


September 1986) was a Moldovan scientist, surgeon, hygienist, and politician
from sovietic period. In 1951 he finished studies at university of medicine from
RSSM,and in the same year admitted in clinical order to the Department of
General Surgery.Also in the same year he was working as a doctor in the
Surgery Department of the District Hospital in Riscani.

From 1954 he was employed as an assistant, later as an associate professor,


professor, and later - head of this department. He also had the position of
medic-chief of the Republican Clinical Hospital and founds the magazine
«Ocrotirea sanatatii’’ . At the age of 32,he became the rector of the University
of Medicine. Testemitanu manages to open the faculties of Dentistry (1959),
Doctoral Training (1962), Preventive Medicine (1963) and Pharmacy (1964).
Due to this fact, the number of students doubles, solving the problem of medical
staff in the country. In 1963 he became the minister of health in RSSM.He
pleaded for the provision of the health system with medical staff, mainly local,
and the introduction of the Romanian language in the training process, an
initiative for which, in 1968, he was removed from the post of minister. He has
published over 220 scientific works (papers) including 15 monographs,
methodological works (papers)on public health management and the history of
medicine. Under the leadership of Nicolae Testemitanu, the concept of
providing the rural population with specialized medical assistance was
elaborated. Nicolae Testemitanu passed away on September 20, 1986 due to a
heart attack. Since 1990 the university of medicine from Republic Of Moldova
has his name in front.
