The Happy Prince

1. Character of the story:

 Major character; Happy Prince as main character in the story, and The Swallow, as the
second character, protagonist- friend of Happy Prince.
The Happy Prince: He is a statue, he was so happy, perfect, gentle, kind hearted and
generous. The Swallow: He is a bird and he wants to travel but ended up with helping
happy Prince till dead, he is loyal and kind. Both of them have round character.
 Minor character;
 The Reed was selfish, Town Councilor and The Mayor, both of them were
greedy, egoist and arrogant. Poor Woman, Little Match Girl, and The Boy. They
took role in minor character which complete the story with each one own
character.

2. Plot of the story:

Exposition; started at the first paragraph High above the city, on a tall column, stood the
statue of the Happy Prince. He was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he
had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt. He was very
much admired indeed. The Prince had everything in his life. He had not seen any sorrows.
The Prince is determined to help people.
Crisis; it occurs when The Swallow met the Happy Prince. Happy Prince said; and now that I
am dead they have set me up here so high that I can see all the ugliness and all the misery of
my city, and though my heart is made of lead yet I cannot choose but weep.
Rising Action; There were so many miseries but the Prince couldn’t do anything because he
was dead. In the other hand, he stayed alive as statue.
Climax; After all belongings of Happy Prince as statue was taken to help people away,
people thought that the statue was no longer beautiful. And The Swallow died because of
cold and the statue of the Happy Prince is melted down by The Mayor and Councilor’s
people. The Happy Prince’s lead heart was thrown away by them.
Falling Action; God asked The Angel to find them.
Resolution; The Angel brought back the dead Swallow and the lead heart of The Happy
Prince, God was happy and said that the Swallow now can sing in paradise garden
forevermore and the Happy Prince shall praise forever in the city of gold.

3. Setting;
 Places; High above the city, the river, at the city, in the winter season, in the Palace of
Sans-Souci and Cathedral tower. Six week after the Swallow’s friends move to Egypt, last
summer.
4. Moral lessons: as human, we need to have a heart like Happy Prince and the Swallow. Helping
each other and others that are in need. Have a passionate heart for others, giving everything
without asking back or to keep things for oneself, this is the reward for both of them, that God
took them in His dwelling place. Because everything that happen in our life has a purpose, don’t
be afraid to do good to others. And what matters is the beauty in the heart, the beauty that
coming from within.
