Formative assessment – key concepts

There are 3 key questions to ask ourselves in order to

successfully apply formative assessment:

• Where is each pupil now?

• Where are we going?
• How do we get there?
Formative assessment facts

• Formative assessment is not about:

– Giving pupils grades
– Completing school records
– Nice but not important activities
• Formative assessment is about:
– Following and tracking pupils’ progress
– Responding to pupil’s emerging learning needs
– Helping pupils become more active and engaged in
their learning
Teacher Handbook – Formative Assessment

For more information, there is a Teacher Handbook

focused on formative assessment which all teachers
should have received.
How are differentiation and formative assessment related?

We can use formative assessment strategies to find out

where each pupil is at and to then work with those pupils
to help them progress in their own way. Based on the
information from formative assessment, we can use
differentiated strategies to do this. This can be related to
any or all of the elements of their learning, and be done
using a range of different types of strategy. By combining
differentiation and formative assessment, we can help all
our pupils achieve their potential.
