Before you start operating this lift truck, make sure that you understand all driving procedures. It is important to operate your lift truck safely and efficiently. This manual will help you learn how to operate your lift truck. This manual describes the controls, special features and the functions of each control, ‘This manual is not a training manual, it is a guide to help authorized operators safely operate a lift truck. Illustrations in this anual Show the operator correct procedures for checking, starting, operating and stopping the lft truck. Clark lift trucks are built to take hard work, but not abuse. They are built to be dependable but as with any lift truck, they are “only as efficient as the operator and the persons responsible for maintaining them. Do not make any repairs to this truck unless you have been trained in lift truck repair procedures and authorized by your ‘employer. Only physically quali fied and thoroughly trained personnel shall be authorized to oper- ate the Clarklift EC500 20, 25, $30, 35, 40, 45, 80 or 55 model trucks. 3. Learn how your truck is operated. Know its safety devices, how they function and how the special attachments, if any, work. 2. Prominently placed on every Clark truck is a list of basic rules for operation. Be aware of rear end swing and be alert to prevent rear end swing damage to material in your operating area, 15, Be extremely cau: tious when operating truck near edge of load- ing dock. 14. Be aware of the position of your fork tips when the truck is in motion. Be alert to pre: vent striking anything with fork tips. 16. Make sure vehicle being entered has been blocked to prevent ac- cidental roll. Bridge plates must have ade quate strength, width, guard rails each side (minimum 3" high recommended), and be properly secured. Safety 17. Never allow stunt riding or indulge in horseplay while oper- ating @ fork lift truck. 19. Never carry un: authorized passengers. The quick response of a lift. truck may cause riders to fall off. If the sta bility of a load is ques- tionable, don’t move it 23. Before lifting check to insure adequate un- obstructed overhead clearance. Gradually and smoothly pull up on lift control lever. Return lever to neutral to stop lift at desired level. 22. Unstable loads are a hazard to you and to your fellow workers. Al: ways make certain that your load is well stack- ed and evenly posi tioned across both forks. Never attempt to lift a load with only one fork. 24, Push down on con- trol lever to lower load. Never lift or lower load while truck isin motion. 27. Remain seated at all times and keep head, hands, arms, feet and legs within the confines ‘of the operator's com- partment. Use caution when placing loads or travel: ing near water pipes, overhead sprinklers, electrical wiring, steam pipes, heaters or other fragile or dangerous equipment or material. 32. Never smoke or al low anyone to smoke in areas where batteries are being charged or in areas where fuels or other flammable fluids or materials are used or stored. Never lift or trans. port personnel on the forks of a lift truck. Use a manlift specifically de- signed for this purpose. 39. Overloading is ex: tremely dangerous. You don’t have complete control of your truck ‘and you are causing un- necessary wear. Never add to your coun terweight, always break down the load. 38. Don’t handle double tiered loads, They're un- stable and difficult to control. Even an over: head guard can't fully protect you from heavy objects dropped from these heights. 40. Don't pass other trucks traveling in the same direction at inter: sections, blind spots or other dangerous loca- tions. code: 01.397 Jan 74 Safety 41. Be extremely care- ful of load end swing when operating with loads of long lumber, pipe, etc, Always carry load close to floor with upright tilted back to cradle load whenever possible. 43, Follow a scheduled planned maintenance and lubrication pro- gram. All adjustments and re- pairs must be performed by thoroughly trained and authorized person: nel only. 42, Know the UL con. struction type of your truck and make certain that trucks of this type may be operated in re- stricted areas before en: tering. Never take an unauthorized truck into restricted or hazardous areas. 44, Remember — your safety and the safety of others depends on you. Push forward on tilt control lever and hold until upright reaches near vertical position. Release control lever to stop upright tilting action at desired point. 14, Gently pull back on tilt control lever and hold. When upright reaches full back tilt check posi- tion of battery indicator needle and release con trol lever. If needle does not re- main in green area bat tery does not have suf- ficient charge. 16. Check for adequate unobstructed overhead clearance. Gently pull up on lift control lever. Observe upright lift and report any erratic or un: usual operation. Release lever to stop lift. 13001 13070 13663 Before Operation 17. Push lift control lever down and hold while observing descent of upright. When forks reach desired position, slightly above floor, re lease the lever to stop upright lowering. Re port any erratic or un: usual operation imme- diately. 19. Check steering oper- ation by turning hand wheel to right and then to left. Return hand wheel to proper posi tion for desired path of travel. Note any unusual noise or operation. 18. Check to insure un: obstructed forward path of travel and apply ser- vice brakes with either foot. Place (Push) direc- tional control switch lever into position for forward travel, 20. Place right foot on accelerator (release ser- | vice brake if operating with left foot) and press gently until truck begins to move forward. Gently press accelerator pedal with right foot until truck moves back- ward. Release acceler- ator pedal and move directional control switch lever to neutral. 23. Never tilt load forward unless it is over stack or at low lift height. 18. Be constantly alert for unusual or erratic operation.
