FIN 364 DUC Mortgage Crisis Effects in the US Money Supply Research Paper

Week 3: Course Project Deliverable 1

Topic:What has been the impact of the 2007-2008 mortgage crisis on the money supply in the
United States? What actions did the Federal Reserve take in response to the mortgage crisis?

Relevance: Looking back, the 2008 financial and mortgage crisis was mainly caused by
deregulation in both the financial and mortgage industries. In the time after this crisis, new
regulations were put in place that now shape our industries, learning about where the regulations
came from and why is very important to understanding our economy in the past and present.

structural changes of the banking industry in the aftermath of the subprime mortgage crisis:

This resource will be very beneficial to me, especially in the beginning stages of research. This
paper elaborates and explains the banking industry’s behavior after the financial and mortgage
crisis in 2007-2008. The authors do an excellent job of laying the groundwork for exactly what
happened during the crisis to give the reader a better general understanding. It then dives further
into banks reaction and changing to adapt to the new financial industry “norms”. They divide
banks into two types of banking institutions which are “conventional banks” and “ethical banks”.

This article benefits my research in the fact that it speaks more directly to the money supply
during the times of the 2007-2008 financial and mortgage crisis. This article elaborates more on
the fact that during the crisis the Federal Government started printing more money to keep up,
meaning the value of the American dollar went down. After the financial crisis this was no
longer possible and led to the destruction of suppliers of credit and the American dollar. The
most risk lending that was being done was in the mortgage sector. Mortgages were being
marketed and sold to demographics that knowingly could not afford current payment or future
payment of the loans they were being held responsible for. Therefore, the mortgage industry has
undergone some of the most intensive regulation corrections. This article focuses on the why and
how of the banking and mortgage industry reactions to the 2007-2008 financial reactions.

Perspectives, 33(1), 81-106. doi:http://dx.doi.org.devry.idm.oclc.org/10.1257/jep.33.1.81

This article focuses on the leading up to the financial crisis and what caused it. More specifically
it focuses on how the housing market and mortgage crisis had an impact on the failing economy.
It is the authors’ belief that if the financial system would have been able to handle the over-
leveraged homeowners and the decline of the housing market, if the financial system was better
regulated and supervised. This article will be a beneficial to my research paper by allowing me to
understand more about the mortgage crisis and housing crash that led up to the crash of our
economy. The focus on what the financial system was lacking that allowed this downfall to
happen is a point of view that will help balance my research paper.

Robinson, R., & Nasser, M. E. (2013). Decomposing US money supply changes since the
financial crisis. International Journal of Financial Studies, 1(2), 32-44.
doi:http://dx.doi.org.devry.idm.oclc.org/10.3390/ijfs1020032

This source relates directly to my topic, as it concerns the money supply during the time
following the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The article talks about how the Federal Reserve reacted
and controlled the money supply right after the 2008 financial crisis, as well as, how Banks
responded. The Federal Reserve drastically increased the monetary base, while Banks increased
excess reserves rather than increasing bank loans, which caused “the public to respond with a
substantial flight to liquidity in the form of currency and demand deposits”. Therefore, money
supply multipliers decreased causing the real money supply to grow more than the base. I think
this knowledge and research in this article will help me with the brunt of my research paper.
