Fabric & Stretch Ratios

To draft a body glove that ts your measurements accurately, we need to know the crosswise and lengthwise stretch ratios (%) of
your fabric. The stretch ratios are calculated using the stretch to measurements. To nd these measurements watch the video
below. You can choose to add your stretch to measurements in either cm or inches. The Lab will then calculate the stretch ratio
for each and display them as a percentage in the blue boxes.

If 10cm of fabric “stretches to” 16cm it has a stretch ratio of 60%

If 10cm of fabric “stretches to” 12cm it has a stretch ratio of 20%

How to Find Fabric Stretch Ratio for Pattern Making

Crosswise Stretch To Measurement

To nd the crosswise stretch to measurement, stretch 10cm of your fabric along the crosswise grain (perpendicular to the
selvedge). If 10cm stretches an additional 4cm it has a stretch to measurement of 14cm. The Lab will calculate the stretch ratio
of your fabric as a percentage.

Lengthwise Stretch To Measurement

To nd the lengthwise stretch to measurement, stretch 10cm of your fabric along the lengthwise grain (parallel to the
selvedge). If 10cm stretches an additional 5cm it has a stretch to measurement of 15cm. The Lab will calculate the stretch ratio
of your fabric as a percentage.

More often than not stretch fabrics will have a lengthwise stretch ratio that is either equal to or less than the crosswise stretch ratio.
