Tasting the World’s First Test-Tube Steak 

 

The  video  with  the  title  of  Tasting  the  World’s First Test-Tube Steak tells us the story 

where  technology  gives  us  the  ability  to  harvest  meat  without  actually  killing  or harvesting 

the  animal  itself,  whereas  the  video  mentions  using  cell  culture  technology  to  culture 

chicken  and  cow  meat.  The  innovation  is  giving  the  world  an  opportunity  to  reduce 

agricultural  stress  by  making  the  meat  in  a  lab.  As  the  earth  would  be  unable  to  handle 

conventional  agriculture  in  the  near  future  due to its stress load. But this technology might 

still come with backlashes and controversies to certain groups of people. 

 

The  technology  itself  is  still  years  behind  before  it  could  actually  flood  into  the 

market  due  to  it’s  expensive  price,  funky  texture,  and  growth  rate  problem.  Yet  there  are 

already  some  conflict  from  the  meat  industry  as  they’re  lobbying  the  government  to  label 

the  meat  as  “lab  meat”  because  meat  should  solely  come  from  animals,  not  from  animal 

cells  grown  in  a  lab.  They  argued  that  this  labelling  will  give  the  “real”  meat  industry  a  fair 

standing  ground  in  terms  of  marketing  and  branding.  This  showed  that  the  meat  industry 

in  itself  is  scared  of  the prospect of the lab grown meat as it’s shown to be cruelty free, fast 

growing,  and  more  sustainable.  It’s  deemed  more  sustainable  due  to  the  fact  that  it 

required  less  total  energy  to  be produced, produced 95% lower greenhouse gas emissions, 

96  %  less  water  consumption, and 95 % less land used. These 4 points will greatly influence 

the  earth's  climate  condition  and  open  up  for  a  more  sustainable  approach  towards 

agriculture.  

The  agricultural world will be more sustainable as more land and water are available 

for  use.  The  commodity  specially oriented to be animal feed could be repurposed for other 

environment  improving solutions. Corn that has long been used as an animal feed could be 

repurposed  as  the  substrate  to  create  ethanol  responsible  for  vehicle  fuel.  However,  the 

enterprises  controlling  the  production  of  lab  grown  meat  shouldn’t  be  granted  full

monopoly  towards  the  market  as  it  might affect the food security and safety. Furthermore, 

transparency  should  also  be  maintained  as  the  community  should  exactly  know what they 

are  consuming  and  it  should  comply  with  the  regulations  from  governing  bodies  such  as 

the  FDA.  The  transparency  will  provide  sufficient  proof  that  the  process  fulfills  some 

cultural restrictions such as halal and kosher thus also improving their livelihood.  

This  technology  is very much different to IVF, AI and ET. Where IVF, AI and ET will still 

grow  out  an  actual  animal  itself  which  can  grow  to  a  full  size  animal  and  still  need  to  be 

grown  and  slaughtered  at  the  end  of  the  day  to  be  consumed.  Whereas  the  cell  culture 

technology  does  not  require  any  slaughtering  and  huge  land  area  to  grow and harvest the 

meat  of  the  animal,  although  IVF,  AI  and  ET  has  the  edge  to  be  cheaper  and  is  already 

available.  In  summary  this  technology  is  proposed  to  reduce  the  land  area  of  agriculture 

and the act of slaughtering to get the food to be consumed.
