Flare System

Liquid-vapour phase relief valves shall discharge into the flare header at an angle 45 degrees in the
direction of header flow, to minimise the effect of kinetic energy and to avoid accumulation of liquid.
Pockets in the flare header and blowdown system shall be prohibited. Flare knock out drum for the
process units should be located at battery limit of the unit.

Flare Piping

Slope

Flare header shall be sloped towards flare knock-out drum. The desired slope shall be ensured
throughout including flat loop.

Loops

Expansion loop shall be provided in horizontal plane as per requirement to accommodate thermal
expansion. Proper thermal analysis temperature shall be established including the possibility of
temperature gradient along the line before providing expansion loops. Efforts shall be made to
minimize the number of loops.

Basic Principle of Orifice Meter

For most piping systems it is 20 pipe diameters upstream and 5 Downstream for an orifice plate.
