About T ity

On the site of ancient Prayag, a holy city that was comparable in fame to
Varanasi and Haridwar, stands Prayagraj. The inscriptions on a pillar attributed
to the 3rd-century-BCE Mauryan emperor Ashoka attest to Prayag's importance
in the ancient Buddhist period of Indian history.Within the gateway to the old
Prayagraj fort, which is strategically located at the confluence of the two rivers,
the pillar, which is believed to have been erected in a nearby location and
transferred to Prayagraj in Mughal times, still stands. The religious significance
of the site to Hinduism continues. Each year a festival takes place at the
confluence of the rivers, and a much larger festival every 12th year which is
