Beginning
Eoghan: “For many years experts around the world have been
warning us of the effects and dangers of spending too much
time using technology and have encouraged us to cut down on
our screen time but now as a society with lockdown being the
new norm, we rely on technology than ever before.”

Eoghan: “Technology is an instrumental part of our society


with statistics stating that 95% of people aged from 16 to 34
own a smartphone and that 4.2 billion people around the world
are active on social media.”

Eoghan: “In a time where we cannot visit our friends and


family due to the national lockdown, social media has kept us
entertained and helped us stay connected with the ones we care
about Now with it being over a year since the pandemic first
began there also many who feeling stuck with a strong
dependency on social media and technology in general.”

Eoghan: “How do you feel technology has affected you during


lockdown?.”

Ciarán: “My experiences with technology have been both good


and bad because I am able to stay connected with my friends
but with learning from home and social media it can be
difficult to find a balance of online and offline life.”

Eoghan: “it’s not just social media which has surge in


popularity due to the pandemic, streaming services have had
such a huge surge in demand that last in March Netflix decided
to lower streaming quality on its platform due to concerns of
overloading the internet.”

Eoghan: “statistics from Oxfam from the first half of 2020


state that there were over 12 million new subscribers to
streaming services like Netflix and Disney plus, with over all
viewing figures up 71%.”
Eoghan: “An issue which has arose during the pandemic was the
growing spread of mis-information on social media especially
on platforms like Facebook. This misinformation encouraged the
“anti-mask” movement and told people to disregard lockdown
rules.”
Eoghan: “Now with the nationwide COVID-19 vaccine rollout
ongoing, Dr Nikki Kanani, GP and medical director of primary
care for the NHS has warned of an “epidemic” of misinformation
about COVID-19 vaccines being spread online.”

Eoghan: “Technology has affected many people in different ways


throughout lockdown both positively and negatively.
Personally, I feel it is important to keep in mind how much
time we spend on our screens and do our best to keep in
contact with friends and family.”
