Vine Lace Scarf

Here’s another easy “first lace” pattern! Except for a bit of garter stitch at the beginning
and end, this is just 4 repeats of the Vine Lace stitch pattern. A variegated yarn really shows
off the wavy pattern well. Please note that as of this writing (November 2007) the
“Caribbean” colorway is on clearance at www.knitpicks.com so it may not be available for
long.

Materials: Knit Picks Gossamer “Caribbean” merino wool yarn (440 yd/50g); #4 US needles.

Gauge: not important, but the scarf pictured measures 6” across after blocking. Blocking also
added 3-4” to the length, for a total of about 40”.

Pattern:

R1 (WS) Purl (same for all odd rows)

R2 K3 * YO K2 SSK K2TOG K2 YO K1 * K1

R4 K2 * YO K2 SSK K2TOG K2 YO K1 * K2

To knit scarf: Cast on 40 stitches. If you tend to cast on tight, try using a #5 or #6 needle for
casting on and binding off. Knit 3 rows, then begin pattern at Row 1. Continue knitting in
pattern until scarf is about 36” long. Purl 3 rows, then bind off.

Finishing: Weave in ends. To show off your lacework, be sure to soak and block your scarf!
