Degumming, physical and chemical Refining, bleaching, deodorization. Partial
hydrogenation and Vanaspati.
Waxes: Occurrence, types of waxes, isolation and purification of waxes, composition and
industrial applications
Analytical tests: for oils, fats and waxes

02 Soaps and Detergents: Fatty and nonfatty raw materials, auxillary chemicals, builders and
fillers. Production of soaps and detergents. Analysis of soaps and detergents

03 Surfactants: Classification of surfactants with structure. Physical properties. Specialty

surfactants like silicone surfactants, microbial surfactants, fluorinated surfactants etc.
Industrial applications.

04 Oleochemicals: Production of fatty acids, low, medium and high pressure batch and
continuous fat splitting. Separation of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, Distillation of
fatty acids. Industrial applications of fatty acids in various sectors like textiles, paints, lubes
etc.
05 Cosmetics: Various formulations under the category of personal care products, home care,
fabric cleaners, hard surface cleaners, oral care products. Role of various ingredients in the
formulations
06 Petroleum and Lubricants: Occurrence of crude oil, classification, physical properties of
crude oil and lubricants, characterization tests for lubes. Difference between vegetable oils
and petroleum oils. Biobased lubes. Structural modifications of vegetable oils and fats
