TITLE
1. Casting of digits/Alphabets.

Introduction
2. Casting of a very old practice of manufacturing in which a metal is melted and poured into a pre-shaped
cavity called a mold. Casting provides abundant flexibility in attaining complicated shapes. Casting however is
accompanied with several defects like blowholes, shrinkage, short flow, cracks, cavitation etc. It is because of this
fact that the foundry work has to be done very carefully.
3. The molds are prepared by placing a pattern in molasses impregnated sand in a mold box. Risers and pour
gates are provided to facilitate the process.

Objective:
4. The objective of the practical is to developing understanding the casting method by practically casting.

Requirements
5. Following are the requirements to complete the practical:
a. Molding Box (Cope and Drag).
b. Prepared Sand.
c. Pattern of digits.
d. Sand rammer
e. Pit Furnace with ladle.

Procedure
6. The following procedure will be adopted in the given steps:
a. Prepare sand by mixing with molasses.
b. Place pattern in the Drag and fill with sand.
c. Ram the sand and remove the pattern.
d. Fill the core and make risers and gates in it.
e. Ram the sand and place over the Drag.
f. Fill the crucible and melt metal.
g. Pour metal through till it appears from the riser.
h. Allow to cool and remove the casting.
i. Carryout cleaning and felting process.

Safety Precautions
7. Following are important precautions which must be adopted during foundry exercise:
a. Wear proper safety clothing.
b. Be extremely careful with molten metal.
c. Do not touch hot job.
d. Pouring should be carried out carefully.
e. Do not leave the task unattended especially when the furnace is operating.
