Review on Article: News Report-A Blended Extensive Reading and Intensive

Reading Activity.

Reading shows its important for people around the world since this skill is

involved in almost every aspect of daily lives especially the academic in order to gain

knowledge and to understand the language itself. Two types of reading methods

stated are extensive reading and intensive reading. Extensive reading covers huge

part while intensive reading involves narrower part.

Extensive reading is needed for general understanding where pupils get

involved with long texts reading. Although they are reading in a high quantities, but

the intention is to ensure they enjoy their reading. Pupils free to choose and pick any

reading materials that they like and they think interesting to be discussed or shared

with their friends. In order to provide them with background knowledge, pupils need

to find supported articles that are related with the topic so that they will get better

understanding about the topic that they have picked.

Next, extensive reading leads pupils to more complex activity. One of

the example of extensive reading task is writing summary after reading an article or

passages where grammar and vocabulary are included. They also need to focus on

deriving the main points or the side one based on the article or books that they read.

The other example is present their reading. Pupils will do a short presentation based

on what they have read. By doing this activity, they will prepare themselves with

some information and knowledge, self-motivation, confidence, and help them to be

more independent.

Moreover, extensive reading discourage the overuse of dictionary. Pupils jot

down any words that seem unfamiliar to them and get to know the words by
guessing and adjustifying them in the sentences or they can look for the meaning

right after they have finished their reading. This will reduce the interference and

avoid the pupils from getting bored since they do not need to spend most of their

reading time searching the meaning of the words in the dictionary. If they do so,

inefficient reading will occur as they are not paying much attention on the reading to

get them to the accurate content.

Meanwhile, intensive reading is slightly different from extensive reading. It

does not allow pupils to select the topic that they like and so they need to follow their

teacher. Since the materials are chosen by the teacher, the text may or may not

interest the reader. The articles chosen by the teacher are usually short, comparable

and easy to understand by pupils. Therefore, they are not necessary to look for

supported articles of the topic

Besides, intensive reading methods applied in a class with multireading

abilities, pupils may not be able to read at their own level because everyone in the

class is reading the same material. This will cause to boredom and pupils with low

reading ability will always keep in their mind that English is difficult thing to learn.

In my case, I faced problems when it comes to reading activity because the

students in my class come from different background education and living. I divided

my students into three groups based on their cognitive level. The first group has the

highest cognitive level. On my observation they can read and translate the meaning

of majority of the reading materials very well. They also can point out the main points

of articles or texts that they read by themselves. The second group is the average

one. They can read quite well, but it takes a little bit of time for them to understand

the whole meaning and the content of the texts. The last group is the students that
could not read well and it is difficult for them to digest the information as there are a

quite numbers of words that they do not understand.

Based on my experience, I practised my teaching by using intensive reading

method previously. I let the students with good reading ability to read on their own,

while for the rest of them, I gathered them together so that I can guide them

efficiently. I will always make sure that I choose the simplest yet fun reading

materials for them. By time I picked an average one so that they can get the

experience of learning new challenging level. After that, I asked each one of them to

jot down the words that seem unfamiliar. They need to discuss with their friends or

directly with their teacher.

In conclusion, students have the right to choose and decide what they need

and want to learn. In the upcoming lesson, I plan to apply the extensive reading

method and blend it with intensive reading in order to encourage the students’

learning process for a lifetime learning.
