MS-2111 Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery
2nd Closing Quiz – Tuesday, 1st December 2020 Duration: 150 minutes
Instruction:
1. Read the question carefully
2. Solve the easier problem first
3. Use the figure in the problem
4. Finish the problem without any help from your friend

1. (30%) Determine the magnitude and direction of force Q which must be applied to link 6 in
Figure 1 to maintain static equilibrium of the system under the action of force P. Please
use the SI units in your answer.

2. (40%) A four-link mechanism is shown in Figure 2a. Link 2 is rotating at a constant angular
velocity of 5 rad/s counterclockwise (CCW). The “blind” polygon acceleration is
provided in Figure 2b, where Oa represents the pole (ground). The mass and moment
inertia of each link are:
m2 = 3 kg I2 = 0.001 kg.m2
m3 = 1.5 kg I3 = 0.00027 kg.m2
m4 = 4.5 kg I4 = 0.008 kg.m2

If the center of gravity of each link is at the middle of link. Determine the magnitude
and the location of the inertia effect of each link!
Show by a force acting on a certain distance h from the center of gravity of each link.

3. (30%) The four-cylinder engine shown in the Figure 3 has identical cranks, connecting rods,
and pistons. The rotary masses are perfectly balanced. Derive an expression for the
shaking forces and shaking moments for the angles and offset values indicated below as
the function of m, R, L, ω, θ, a. Are the primary or secondary shaking forces balanced?
What about the primary and secondary shaking moments?
Φ1 = 0° Φ3 = 90°
Φ2 = 180° Φ4 = 270°
a1 = 0 a3 = 3a
a2 = 2a a4 = 4a
Please note that the crank angles Φi listed above are the true crank angles, and might not
be shown correctly in the figure.

Good luck!
