CSEC Social Studies paper 2 uses a variety of verbs (action words) that dictates the amount of

information candidates are to write; the points allocation can also be used as a guide. This notes will
highlights those terms & their meaning.

EXPLAIN means to make an idea clear by adding details & making the necessary connections.

DESCRIBE speaks to detailed giving an account of in words usually appealing to the senses.

DISCUSS means to examine in details making sure to include all aspects that may be relevant; pro's &
con's.

OUTLINE is expressing the main points only.

DEFINE is to give the meaning of a word or concept.

LIST is a regular term which you all know how to do; oh so well.

We already looked at SUGGESTION & JUSTIFICATION.

Other Terms to pay keen attention to:

Advantages (benefits) conditions that are favorable while disadvantages are conditions that are not
favorable.

Causes/ Contributing factors refer to actions that bring about a particular result.

Consequences / Effects/ Impact speak to changes which are results of, typically those that are
unwelcome &unpleasant.
Affect is to influence or cause a change to a situation.
