mountains that gradually give way to a taller one, upon which the famous Hollywood sign can be
read.
“We’re a city of culture,” said Madeline Peña, digital content team coordinator for the Los Angeles
Public Library. “That is why we showcase all these books about the history of Los Angeles. People
can come to the stand and listen to all kinds of talks we’re going to have, which range from learning
about the Los Angeles Public Library System to finding out how to obtain a visa.”
“Los Angeles was founded in 1781,” Yago Cura, adult services librarian for the Vernon branch of
the Los Angeles Public Library added. “There’s a history there. That’s why we brought books about
things like living and dining in Los Angeles, or what its punk scene was like in the 1970s.” Cura
also pointed out that those books are being donated to Buenos Aires’ Municipal Library after the
Book Fair is over.
“What I saw in Buenos Aires is amazing,” Madeline Peña said, with regard to the book culture
here. “The fact that the Book Fair is open three weeks and it’s packed all the time says so much
about the people from Buenos Aires.”
When it comes to comparing book cultures between these two cities, Yago Cura, who was raised in
New York by two Argentine parents, is more than qualified to draw a parallel.
“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I’m a librarian, writer, translator and that my parents are from
here. The book culture here is really amazing; you can’t put it in any other way.”
