1. Why is it important to have a scope and standards of practice for gerontological nursing?

The care for an older adult is unique, as they require more awareness on the impact of age related
conditions that would require more needs. So, it’s important to have a scope and standards of
practice for gerontological nursing by ensuring that nurses are able to provide the highest quality of
care to the growing population.

2. How do the scope and standards improve patient outcomes and nursing awareness to this
population of patients?

This is implemented by having specialized nurses who all employ a shared body of skills and
knowledge that addresses the full range of needs that’s related to the process of aging, the
specialized care of older adults and the uniqueness of old adults as a group and individuals
(American Nurses Association, 2001). With this specialized care, this will improve the patient
outcomes by involving the patient and their significant other, as well as allowing the nurses to work
with their interprofessional teams in where they can effectively work together as a team to ensure
that the patients can receive the quality care.

3. Discuss the significance of global trends in aging populations as it relates to health care for
the older adult client.

The significance of the global trends within the aging population is a concern, as the length of life has
been continually expanded. This rise of elderly population can mean more increasing rates of
conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, arthritis, diabetes, heart diseases, cancers,
dementia, and congestive heart failure (Garza, 2016). This would mean in order to offer more higher
quality care; one must become fairly familiar with the patient population. However, the challenge on
this subject is the identifying what new approaches healthcare could implement to develop new
strategies in order to better prepare for the new growth of chronic conditions, as well preventing fall
related injuries to the older adult client.
