Task 1 response
The line graph compares the amount of four different goods transported in the UK over a period of 28
years, measured in million tonnes.
It is clear that road was by far the most common type of transporting goods over the period shown.
The pipeline, however, was the least used goods transportation.
In 1974, the road was the main source of shipping goods in Britain, making up to 70 million tonnes of
goods. Goods transported by water and rail were about 40 million tonnes, and pipeline provided a
negligible amount. Just one year later, water transportation overtook rail shipment as the second most
common means of delivering goods.
Between 1980 and 1995, goods delivered by pipeline rose steadily to a peak of over 20 million tonnes.
By contrast, the figure for rail shipment experienced various fluctuation before hitting the lowest point
of just below 30 million tonnes of goods shipped in the same period. Oscillations could also be seen
in road delivery, which grew to just under 80 million tonnes of goods in 1995 before skyrocketing to
just under 100 7 years later. For the whole 28-year period, water transportation plummeted to over 60
million tonnes of goods transported in 2002 after having a stable growth. (206 words)
