Jack and the Beanstalk’s Sphere’s of Action

The spheres of action are:

The hero: Jack is the main character of the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk.

The villain: The male giant who tries to catch and want to eat Jack.

The donor: The old man who gives Jack magical beans that can grow up into the sky in
one night.

The helper: The female giant that helps Jack hiding in the oven.

The dispatcher: Jack’s mother who orders Jack to sell their cow.

Narrative funtions:

1st Sphere: Introduction

Steps 1 to 7 introduces the situation and most of the main characters, setting the scene for
subsequent adventure.

1. Absentation: Their cow named Milky-white doesn’t produce milk again suddenly, so
Jack’s mother orders Jack to sell the cow and they have the money to open a
shop.

2. Interdiction: none

3. Violation of interdiction: none

4. Reconnaissance: none

5. Delivery: none

6. Trickery: none

7. Complicity: none

2nd Sphere: The Body of the story

The main story starts here and extends to the departure of the hero on the main quest.
8. Lack: Jack and his mother don’t have any money becase their cow doesn’t produce
milk again so they need to sell the cow and use the money to open a shop.

9. The connective incident:

10. Counteraction: Hero chooses positive action

11. Departure: Jack leaves his house to sell the cow in order to get money from selling the cow.

3rd Sphere: The Donor Sequence

In the third sphere, the hero goes in search of a method by which the solution may be reached,
gaining the magical agent from the Donor. Note that this in itself may be a
complete story.

12. Testing: The old man offers Jack magical beans that can grow up into the sky
overnight and he can get his cow back if it doesn’t turn out to be true.

13. Reaction: Jack accepts the old man’s offer and exchange the cow with the magical
beans.

14. Acquisition: Jack receives the magical beans the old man offered.

15. Guidance: Jack climbs to the giant beanstalk that has grown up overnight and he finds a
big tall house at the top of the giant beanstalk. After that, he meets the female
giant that gives him a breakfast.

16. Struggle: Jack steals the goose that lays the golden eggs and he also steals a magical
harp that can sing. But the male giant awaken from his sleep and tries to
catch Jack.

17. Branding: none

18. Victory: Jack slides down the giant beanstalk and calls his mother to grab an axe, so
Jack can chop down the giant beanstalk. Then he chops down the giant
beanstalk before the male giant could reach him, so the male giant falls down
from height and dies.

19. Resolution: Jack and his mother now become rich because they sell the golden eggs that
he stole from the male giant.
