Helping Your Children

Do Better In School
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
Discover your child’s intellectual
abilities... And teach him/her to
celebrate his/her strengths.
Find out what interests him/her.
As soon as you have an idea of
your child’s strengths and
interests, here are the
8 STEPS to nurture his/her gifts:
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
1. ENCOURAGE EXPLORATION

Discover what your child is

good at and start from
there.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
If your child is good in sports,
support him/her in his/her
interest.
Don’t discourage your child from
developing his/her own interest
just because you want your child
to excel in a different field like
mathematics.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
When we support our child in
his/her interest and in where
he/she is good at, we build
his/her self-confidence.
By doing this, we eventually
develop in our child the
realization that he/she may also
be good in other things.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
2. Don’t expect too much

Keep goals
reachable to
avoid frustration
and poor image
on the part of
your child.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
It’s good to expect your child to
do well in school, like doing
his/her assignments on time or
learning to respect his/her
teachers...
But do not expect him/her to
come home with a 95% grade in
every subject, every time.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

Who knows, by not

pushing your child
too much, he/she
will bloom in
his/her own time
and gradually get
higher and higher
grades.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
3. Stay well-stocked
Nothing is more frustrating for
children than discovering that
they are out of materials, just as
they are beginning on a school
project.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
Stock up on school supplies.
Invest on reference materials like
encyclopedias, almanacs, and
dictionaries that can help spark
your child’s curiosity.
Providing him/her with a lot of
reading materials at an early age
exposes him/her to reading.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
A child can simply start looking at
the pictures, even without
reading.
With that, your child may start
to like
reading &
keeping facts
and trivia
in mind.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

Buying your children

books instead of
toys and gadgets
that do not really
stimulate their mind
& develop their
potentials
could be a wiser
investment.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
4. Develop good study habits
Even at an early age, help your
kid to come up with a daily
schedule that
includes study time,
play time, hobby
time, family time,
etc.
Most families today are very busy.

To meet all the demands of work,

family, and recreation, school
sometimes gets bumped
down on priority.

To prevent that from happening,

develop a firm but flexible daily
schedule with your child.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
Doing this will help your child
manage time and develop self-
discipline.
When you allow your child to make
his/her own schedule, you are telling
him/her indirectly that this is
what he/she wants
and therefore must
be followed
religiously.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
5. Expose your child to diverse
surroundings

Help your child to understand

that there is an entire world
outside home and school.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
Take your child to a museum, a
concert, the zoo, or to a basketball
game
(instead of the weekly visits to the
mall).
Music, art, human culture,
and nature are stimuli
that trigger further
discovery and curiosity
in children.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
If you don’t have the time and
resources to take your kid to
these places,
“travel” with him/her
by reading books, magazines,
newspapers, or watching videos
with him/her about such places
and activities.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

But don’t forget, that just like

any real-life
adventure,
your child needs you to
to be his/her
“tourist guide”
while reading and
watching.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
6. Eat right

“A sound mind
is a sound body.”
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

Poor nutrition and skipped

meals lead to exhaustion
and weakness.
Feeding the
stomach the
right way will
help feed the
brain the right way.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
7. Know who teaches them
It is important to make sure
that your child is getting the
support he/she needs in
school.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

Take the opportunity to know

your child’s school
administrators, guidance
counselors & teachers.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

When the guidance counselor/

teacher knows you, they will
have a better sense of your
child’s needs through the
information that you share
about your child
and how he/she is at
home.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
8. Remember to have fun
Allow your child to be
a HAPPY learner.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!
Research suggests that when
children enjoy learning,
retaining information is easier.
Childhood is about discovery.
As your child makes new
discoveries about
himself/herself and his/her
world, put those discoveries in
context.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

Provide your kid with rich

learning experiences
by exposing him/her to
different challenges
& first-hand
learning.
EVERY CHILD IS SMART!

Your kid’s learning is YOUR

responsibility as a parent.

Time and loving attention have always

been, and will always be, what gives
our kids the edge.

Multiple Intelligence

Howard Gardner’s
Eight (8) Intelligences
Multiple Intelligence
In 1983, American Psychologist,
Howard Gardner published
FRAMES OF THE MIND:
The Theory of Multiple Intelligence
proclaiming that children demonstrate
intelligence
in many different ways.
Logical Intelligence

• Easily understand numbers, patterns, and
relationships
• Figure things out by categorizing,
systematically asking questions, or doing
experiments

Whatever your children are good at,
INSPIRE them to continue to
bloom to the fullest…
and whatever it is they may need
help in, ENCOURAGE them to keep
discovering and developing to
become the best that they can be…
Recently,
a 9th intelligence was identified:
EXISTENTIAL INTELLIGENCE
or
SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE
Existential Intelligence or
Spiritual Intelligence
• LIFE SMART
• Sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep
questions about human existence,
such as the meaning of life,
why we die, and
how did we get here
As an individual who is gifted with so
much…
Can you identify your intelligences?
Are there other intelligences
you can still develop,
or would like to develop?
