How do I create an Event Tree?

To create an Event Tree you chose Event Tree in the Project Explorer, see Figure 1

Figure 1 Event Tree in Project Explore

To create the Event Tree choose Insert Event Tree in the Record menu (Figure 2). The Event
Tree dialog will then appear (Figure 3). The Event Tree will be given a default ID which can be
chaNged.

When you have made the changes you want, press OK.  The window which can be seen in
Figure 4 will appear.

An event tree consists of:

· An event tree structure

· An initiating event
· One or more function events
· Sequences

An event tree is used for modelling sequences of events given an initiating event. The
consequences that the sequences lead to are determined by function events.

How do I Build an Event Tree?

When you create a new event tree, an initiating event is automatically created and added to the
event tree, see Figure 4. An initiating event can be represented by a basic event, a top gate in a
fault tree or a consequence from another event tree.

Figure 4 Event Tree

The inputs to function events can be basic events or top gates in the fault tree model.

Adding and Editing Events in Your Event Tree

Below are examples of how you can add, edit and replace events in your event tree.

How to add a function event in an event tree:

1. Click the right mouse button when the pointer is over the rectangular box representing the
initiating event.

2. Choose "Insert Function Event" to insert a function event

3. A dialog window, similar to that of adding events to fault tree pages, appears. From its drop-
down list you can choose an existing function event or create a new function event by typing its
ID in the "Event ID" field.

How to replace an initiating event in an event tree:

1. Click the right mouse button when the pointer is over the rectangular box representing the
initiating event.

2. Choose "Replace..." from the menu to replace the initiating event. There has to be one (no
more - no less) initiating event defined in an event tree.

3. Select from the list values for the fields "Find what" and "Replace with".

How to edit an initiating event or a function event in an event tree:

1. Double-click on the rectangular box representing an initiating event or a function event

located above the sequences in your event tree. A dialog window for the initiating event or one
of the function events is opened.

2. Select the Input tab to define a reference to a basic event, a top gate in a fault tree, a
consequence or a FT/sequence/consequence analysis case.

3. Click the OK button.

Figure 5Assigning an input to an initiating event

If you have started a brand new project you will of course have no basic events, top gates or
consequences to assign as input event to the initiating event (as shown in Figure 5, above). To
create a new event you simply type its ID in the "Input Event" field and click OK. The event is
added to the project database.

Adding and Editing Sequences and Consequences in your Event Tree

Sequences are created with branch points and by assigning consequences to each sequence.
Below you can find examples of how to add and edit sequences and consequences in event trees.

How to add sequences:

1. Select a branch point by clicking on the scenario line under a function event. The selected
branch point is marked by a small grey square.

2. Click the right mouse button and choose "Insert branch" from the menu.

3. A new sequence is added to the branch-point.

4. You can assign one or more consequences to each sequence.

How to assign a consequence:

1. Right mouse click when the cursor is over the Consequence column for a sequence and choose
Add Consequence...

or

1. Double-click in the consequence column for a sequence.

2. Choose the tab for Consequences in the Sequence dialog window.

3. Find the consequence in the list and press the Enter key

4. To create a new consequence you can type its ID in the ID field for consequences and click
OK. The consequence is added to the project database.

How to copy or cut and paste sequences:

1. Select a branch point by clicking on the scenario line under a function event. The selected
branch point is marked by a small grey square.

2. Click the right mouse button and choose "Select branch" from the menu.

3. Choose "Copy" or "Cut" from the toolbar.

4. Select a branch point to paste the sequences and choose "Paste" from the toolbar.

How do I link event trees?

In RiskSpectrum PSA you can link your event trees by assigning a consequence from one or
many other event trees as initiating event.

Under the "Input"-tab in the dialog window for an initiating event as shown in Figure 1 you can
assign basic events, gates or consequences as inputs.
Figure 1. The initiating event dialog window

If a consequence is defined as an initiating event for an event tree page ('child' page),
RiskSpectrum PSA searches other event tree pages in order to find sequences resulting in this
consequence and joins such sequences with sequences in the 'child' page. This process is
repeated for each event tree page having a consequence as an initiating event.
