Word Order in English Sentences

1. Positive Sentences

S + V + IO + DO + PLACE + TIME
I will tell you the story at school tomorrow.
2. Negative Sentences

S + V + NOT + IO + DO + PLACE + TIME


I will not tell you the story at school tomorrow.
Time adverbials – at the beginning – no emphasis
Tomorrow I will tell the story.
Adverbials of frequency (always, never, usually, frequently, etc.) – before the main verb but
after auxiliary
He doesn’t always play tennis.
We are usually here in the summer.
I have never been abroad.
Adverbials of place (here, there, etc.) – behind the DO or the V
S + V + DO + Adv.
I didn’t see him there.
3. Questions
INTERROGATION (Wh- word) + AUX + S + V + IO + DO + PLACE + TIME?
What would you like to tell me?
Did you have a party in you flat yesterday?
When were you here?
INTERROGATION + V + DO?
Who asked you?
Adjectives

1. OPINION (interesting book, boring lecture)
