Bug: Geostatistical Analyst tutorial data does not line up with other data

Article ID: 21870

Bug Id: CQ00136292 CQ00246713
Software: ArcGIS - ArcEditor 8.1, 8.1.2, 8.2, 8.3, 9.0 ArcGIS - ArcInfo 8.1,
8.1.2, 8.2, 8.3, 9.0 ArcGIS - ArcView 8.1, 8.1.2, 8.2, 8.3, 9.0
Platforms: Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP
Description
When trying to use other datasets with the Geostatistical Analyst tutorial data,
the datasets do not line up properly.

Cause
The coordinate system of the tutorial data is incorrect.

Workaround
For version 9.0, follow steps 13 through 16. At version 8.3, follow steps 1 through
7. For previous versions, follow steps 1 through 12.

Using ArcToolbox or ArcCatalog, assign the correct coordinate system to the

tutorial data.

1. For the grid, start the Define Projection Wizard (coverages, grids, TINs).
2. Select the Define the coordinate system interactively option and click Next.
3. Browse to the location of the tutorial data and select the ca_hillshade grid.
Click OK for the warning message that says the data has an existing projection.
4. Select Albers Equal-Area from the Projections list and click Next.
5. Enter these values for the parameters:
Units: meters
1st standard parallel: 29 30 0.0
2nd standard parallel: 45 30 0.0
Longitude of center: -96 0 0.0
Latitude of origin: 37 30 0.0
False easting: 0
False northing: 0
X Shift: 0
Y Shift: 0

Click Next.
6. Select NAD 1983 (US-NADCON) and click Next.
7. Confirm the parameters and click Finish.
8. For the rest of the data, start the Define Projection Wizard (shapefiles,
geodatabase).
9. Navigate to the location of the tutorial data and select all the shapefiles.
Click OK on the warning message that the shapefiles already have a defined
coordinate system. Click Next.
10. Click Select Coordinate System. On the Spatial Reference Properties panel,
click Select.
11. Navigate to Projected Coordinate Systems > Continental > North America.
Select 'USA Contiguous Albers Equal Area Conic.prj' and click Add.
12. Click OK and confirm that the parameters are:

False_Easting: 0.000000
False_Northing: 0.000000
Central_Meridian: -96.000000
Standard_Parallel_1: 29.500000
Standard_Parallel_2: 45.500000
Latitude_Of_Origin: 37.500000

Click Next and Finish. For versions prior to 8.3, the procedure is complete.
13. The following steps are for version 9.0 only. Start ArcCatalog and navigate
to the ca_hillshade GRID. The tutorial data's default location is in the ArcTutor
directory in the ArcGIS home.
14. Right click on the GRID and select Properties.
15. Scroll down to the Spatial Reference section and click Edit. OK the warning
message about an existing coordinate system definition.
16. Follow steps 4 through 7 in the list above. The steps describe what map
projection, parameter values, and datum to select.
