Definition of Terms

Functionalist-

1. The doctrine that the function of an object should determine its design and materials.

2. A doctrine stressing purpose, practicality, and utility.

3. Philosophy The doctrine in the philosophy of mind according to which mental states are defined by
their causes and effects.

Culture and Traditions- Tradition is about passing customs and/or beliefs from one generation to the
next. Culture is the social behavior and norms that define a particular society

Personal Views- an opinion, belief, or idea, or a way of thinking about something:

Religion- a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when
considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual
observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs-

Crossdressing- wear clothing typical of the opposite sex.

Coming out | The process in which a person first acknowledges, accepts and appreciates their sexual
orientation or gender identity and begins to share that with others.

Gender identity | One’s innermost concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither – how
individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. One's gender identity can be the same
or different from their sex assigned at birth.

Sexual orientation | An inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to


other people.

Gender non-conforming | A broad term referring to people who do not behave in a way that conforms
to the traditional expectations of their gender, or whose gender expression does not fit neatly into a
category.

Homosexuality - is "an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions" to people of
the same sex.

Heterosexuality- sexual feeling or behavior directed toward a person or persons of the opposite sex.
