Benedicts: Used for Glucose


1. Benedicts is a test to check for the presence of
glucose in a food sample
2. Few steps to perform benedicts test:
Step 1
- 2cm3 of food sample in test tube
- 2cm3 of benedicts solution test tube
- Mix the contents in the test tube
Step 2
- After slightly mixing it put the test tube in boiling
water for 4-5 minutes. Then take it out and wait
for a minute to cool down.
Step 3
- If the solution gives you green, yellow, orange
and red that means that glucose is present and
red means that is has most glucose and if the
color light blue doesn’t change that means that
glucose is not present.

Iodine: Used for testing starch


1. You take a sample (starch)
2. You take iodine
3. Put it on the leaf or something
4. If it turns blue black, then starch is present

Emulsification test: For fats


1. You collect the sample and add deionized water in
a test tube
2. Then you add ethanol to the sample and shake if
thoroughly
3. If there is a layer of cloudy white suspension, then
fat is present

Biuret test: Used for proteins


1. Sample and add 2ml of Biuret agent
2. Then you are going to let it rest in a test tube
3. If we see the lilac color or purple, then protein is
present
4. If the solution is blue, then protein is not present
