Purpose

Working Title

My working title for a magazine for the Cambridge Culture Festival is “Undisclosed”. As the
‘culture’ that my magazine will be focusing on is the LGBT+ community in the cambridge
area. Undisclosed means something that has not been identified or not known.
Considering identity is such a large part of the community I believe Undisclosed to be a
fitting title.

Logline

An insight into the LGBT+ community in East Anglia with resources and interviews with
members of the community

Purpose of product

Whilst the product is being created for the Cambridge Culture Festival, I intend for it to be
an informative magazine on how the community interacts with the area, for example
events like pride. I would also like for the magazine to be educational for those who aren't
a part of the community or for those who are questioning. To achieve this, the magazine
will include a variety of resources for readers to explore. There will also be a main interview
with a person on their experience of being LGBT+ and how it has affected the way they live
their lives. In the launch issue, the interview will be done with a student.

Product objective

The main objective of this product is to create a sign of community. As Cambridgeshire is

slightly rural, it can be easy to isolate yourself, especially during the pandemic. By making a
magazine focusing on the LGBT community in the area, the aim is to make LBGT people
feel a stronger sense of community. By including details of organisations for queer people
and highlighting queer spaces across the county, the readers should be able to connect to
others who understand their experiences. The magazine will act as a resource.

Synopsis

Whilst the LGBT community is spread across the world and shares some traditions, the way
in which people connect and perform those traditions change based on the area. The area
has its own little pockets of LGBT culture spread around Cambridgeshire. There are
different subsets of the community with areas frequented by students being different to
those inhabited by adults.

The magazine will be separated into sections for easy navigation both digitally and in hard
copies. These will be: resources, recommendations, local services and the main interview in
the middle.

As I am planning for the magazine to be a useful resource for the community, having
resources on legislation, friendly areas and other important information will make sure
that the magazine can be useful. It also shows that there are resources available for those
who need them. And whilst it might not be a direct reflection of the culture in the area, it
gives a more general view of how accepting the community can be. Being accepted is a
large part of the culture.

Having information on local services is a large highlight of the culture. The services can be
anything from lgbt friendly sexual health clinics to venues who hold events for the
community. This fits completely into the brief which wants to highlight the different
cultures in the cambridge area. Including the entire county allows for a wide area of
discussion.

The main interview is an opportunity to not only look at an individual, but the ways in
which they interact with the culture. It will allow for various different view points to be
discussed and presented in an accessible way. The interview will be accompanied by a
photoshoot of the interviewee in both professional and casual environments. This is to
show that whilst they are a part of the LGBT community they are also a person with
different facets to their personality.

Finally there will be recommendations and discussions of various media that have
significance in the culture, whether it be a look at a classic or a new piece of media. The
media can be film or literature or art where either one or more of the creatives that were a
part of the project are LGBT.

I am planning for the magazine to be a positive reflection of the lgbt culture and the
Cambridge area.

Audience

Demographics

As the community encapsulates a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, I am

going to try to make the magazine as inclusive as possible. If I were to go for a target
demographic, I would try to attract an audience in the D/E income bracket. To ensure this it
would mean making the cost of the magazine is low, or make sure there are opportunities
for people to access the magazine and its information for free. This is something that is
done with a lot of local publications as they're there to help the people living in the area.

I expect that it would attract people around the ages 15-25, and this has been planned for
in the colour scheme choice which is made up of light shades. The content inside will be
more appealing to this age group as many of the charities are targeted towards them. The
media discusses is also more likely to be consumed by this age range.

I do not want a person's job or class background to prevent or disway them from reading
the magazine. However, my main focus is bringing people together to celebrate their
differences. I believe that targeting students, whether they have jobs or not, is the most
logical decision.

Psychographics

I believe that those in the Reformer and Explorer categories will be the most attracted to
the magazine. Explorers value being an individual and take pride in their identity, which is a
large part of the LGBT community. They also seek out different experiences to have, so the
information on upcoming events and community spaces may appeal to them. They are also
often students. I think that reformers would enjoy the magazine as they look for freedom
from restrictions. Reformers are not materialistic, but due to the magazine not being a part
of a larger corporation, that shouldn't detract them from reading or purchasing the
magazine.

I am hoping to attract those who are, at a minimum, open minded. If the reader is of an
open mind it could allow them to make others' lives better, or help them achieve a better
understanding of people around them.

Geographics

As the magazine is showcasing the cambridge area, the information and invisuals will be
more appealing to people who live there. It could also be of interest to people planning a
visit to the area as various issues will highlight areas of interest to those in the queer
community.

Style

Typography

I have chosen to use a combination of italicised and original versions

of the font Roboto. The font is sans-serif which makes it more
readable for those with reading difficulties like dyslexia. This was an
important detail to me as I wanted the magazine to be as accessible
as possible. The font is also aesthetically pleasing, and I believe it would appeal to the
aforementioned demographic.

Colour palette

After looking through a wide range of different colour palette

choices, I landed on this four colour palette. Not only are these
colours aesthetically pleasing, they fit well with the chosen
font. I am planning to use these colours throughout the magazine in blocks of colour to
make sure that each page is eye-catching.

Photography

I have planned for the main photography to be of the interviewee. I am going to have a
photoshoot on a plain background, which gives the ability to change it in post to one of the
colours from the palette. I want to make sure that the person looks relaxed and happy. I
want to have both shots with eye contact and without. I have to take safety into
consideration, which does open up the possibility of taking photos outside.

The rest of the images will come from the companies featured in the magazine. This is to
make sure that the advertisement fits in to the way they wish to be seen as a brand.

Page style

My idea for the overall page design is to use asymmetrical boxes of colours to draw the
eyes attention. The boxes will be against a white background to create a clean professional
look, which should be very aesthetically pleasing.

The blocks of colour will also be present in the front and back cover to ensure a cohesive
look. By having continuing themes in a style it should make the magazine more marketable
and encourage people to pick it up and read it.
