BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

INTRODUCTION

The pioneering role of applications such as

RUCAPS, Sonata and Reflex has been recognized
by Laiserin as well as the UK’s Royal Academy of
Engineering. Due to the complexity of gathering all
the relevant information when working with BIM,
some companies have developed software designed
specifically to work in a BIM framework. These
applications differ from architectural drafting tools
such as AutoCAD by allowing the addition of further
information (time, cost, manufacturers’ details,
sustainability, and maintenance information, etc.)
to the building model.

As Graphisoft had been developing such

solutions for longer than its competitors, Laiserin
regarded its ArchiCAD application as then “one
of the most mature BIM solutions on the market.”
Following its launch in 1987, ArchiCAD became
regarded by some as the first implementation of
BIM, as it was the first CAD product on a personal
computer able to create both 2D and 3D geometry,
as well as the first commercial BIM product for
personal computers.a

PROCESS OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
The process of BIM supports the creation of intelligent data that can be used throughout the lifecycle of a
building or infrastructure project.

PLAN
Inform project planning by combining reality capture
and real-world data to generate context models of
the existing built and natural environment.

DESIGN
During this phase, conceptual design, analysis,
detailing and documentation are performed. The
preconstruction process begins using BIM data to
inform scheduling and logistics.

BUILD
During this phase, fabrication begins using BIM
specifications. Project construction logistics are
shared with trades and contractors to ensure
optimum timing and efficiency.

OPERATE
BIM data carries over to operations and
maintenance of finished assets. BIM data can be
used down the road for cost-effective renovation or
efficient deconstruction too.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

BIM EXECUTION PLAN

BIM Execution Plan is designed to address the Employer’s Information Requirements (EIR). The EIR
sets out the information required by an employer at points in a project where key decisions need to be made.
The EIR supplements (but is distinct from) the project brief. Whereas the project brief defines the nature
of the built asset being procured, the EIR defines the information about the built asset that the employer
wishes to procure. The aim being to ensure that the design is developed in line with the employer’s needs
and the employer is able to operate the completed development effectively and efficiently.

The pre-contract BIM Execution Plan should address everything requested in the EIR and set out
the Project Implementation Plan (PIP), project goals for collaboration and information modelling and key
project milestones and where they fit with the broader project programme. It should also set out how the
project’s information model will be assembled and delivered.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

TYPES OF BIM USED IN CONSTRUCTION

Building Information Modeling applications allow the extraction of different views from a building
model for drawing production and other uses. BIM goes beyond the planning and design phase of
the project, extending throughout the building life cycle. The supporting processes of building lifecycle
management include cost management, construction management and project management.

GEOGRAPHIC BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

GIS data is necessary for planning all operations regarding
any project. BIM model integration with GIS is vital as it allows
for the graphical understanding of the designing and building
process of geographic conditions where a project is set to
take place. BIM can also provide insight into flood-prone
areas and give designers accurate information to influence
a structure’s location, orientation, and even construction
materials. With BIM, you may design a physical structure at
an object-level through sketching. BIM data is closely tied with
GIS for designing and constructing a specific object, structure,
or shape. It allows design and construction companies to
collect accurate and valuable data that will lead to much
more effective and efficient design and project management.

STRUCTURAL BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

BIM is used for Structural analysis by civil engineers. It supports
over 90 different steel, concrete, timber, aluminium codes. It
provides various features such as Analytical Modelling, Building
Planner, Autodrafter, Physical Modelling, Advanced Concrete,
and Slab Design, Earthquake Mode and much more. It also
comes with functions such as General arrangement drawings,
Steel shop drawings, Robot Structural Analysis interoperability
and many other features. Importing Options helps to take data
from other applications and further maximize the work with
ease. It is a nice way to design Slabs, Foundation, Beams,
Columns, Walls, Ramps, etc with a variety of different shapes
and types matching your needs.

TYPES OF BIM USED IN CONSTRUCTION

CONCRETE BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

BIM is now leveraged for accurate, detailed and constructible parametric modeling for component-
oriented concrete design and plan. We can now enhance Dynamic Rebar detailing & shop drawings
and create ‘intelligent’ rebar objects for incorporation. Foundation drawings are provided using assigned
foundation layout, general detail and title blocks. With BIM models, quantity survey and estimation have
become easy with information available such as Unit Costs, Order of Magnitude Estimates, Square Foot
and Cubic Foot Estimates.

TYPES OF BIM USED IN CONSTRUCTION

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT INFORMATION MODELING

BIM solutions allow you to explore and evaluate a

project’s constructability before it’s built. BIM can be
used throughout the building life cycle, beyond the design
and documentation. BIM models support construction
techniques, construction planning, cost and quantity
feedback, fabrication, and facilities management.
Companies can now have better construction cost
estimation by just analyzing the model and both
parties can properly visualize the project without
having it constructed. Through features such as
document management, design collaboration, quality
management and safety management, managing
construction has become customised.

PRECAST BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

Architects can engage with their drawings

and models in the way that they always
have, but the level of collaboration, input
and streamlining of processes dramatically
improves workflows. New options for
assessment are also created, opening
up new prospects for de-risking projects
and delivering superior outcomes and
processes. BIM can display a building’s
analysis of the building’s environmental
impact over time. This helps the architect
find the most energy-efficient materials
and most effective regenerative design
features. Using BIM, one can observe the life-cycle facility management view. This display shows anticipated
operational costs for the building once it’s complete. This allows architects to make wise design decisions
that will lead to greater cost savings and simpler building maintenance for you in the future. Architectural
BIM models for architectures come with features such as Computational design, Space planning, Energy
analysis, Light and daylight analysis, Display complex spatial relationships Virtual conflict detection and
resolution and Extended Reality.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

23
TYPES OF BIM USED IN CONSTRUCTION

MEP BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

BIM allows engineers, designers and contractors in
the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) fields
to design building systems in their particular discipline.
These solutions streamline the design, modeling,
documentation, and construction of these systems and
ensure they integrate seamlessly with the building it’s
being placed into. With the correct software can develop
data-rich MEP BIM models of the various MEP systems
and carry out the coordination tasks. One can also
develop data-rich MEP BIM models of the various MEP
systems with 4D models.

INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

Implementing BIM on capital projects can provide benefits across planning, design, delivery, and
operational areas. Access to coordinated and consistent model views by all stakeholders supports: BIM in
infrastructure projects improves outcomes with its ability to investigate multiple scenarios, providing data-
driven assurance that projects can be
delivered on schedule and budget.
Models are designed to cater to all
disciplines within the civil engineering
industry including Road, Rail,
Drainage, Utilities etc. The information
used in this initial stage of planning
evolves in various steps. In the design
part, you will obtain virtual models
that are constructible, and then these
models will serve as the prospective
database to carry out the maintenance
of the asset in a more efficient way.
Implementing BIM on capital projects
can provide benefits across planning, design, delivery, and operational areas. Connecting diverse and
distributed teams to the project requires data continuity: consistently accurate data that is accessible at
any time, by anyone, working anywhere. Using BIM, the information inherent in the model provides the
foundation for today’s web-based and mobile collaboration tools, with a model-centric approach to better
coordinate large, diverse, and distributed team workflows.

INTRODUCTION

AUTODESK REVIT

Autodesk Revit is a building information modelling software for architects, landscape

architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers, designers and
contractors. The original software was developed by Charles River Software, founded in 1997, renamed
Revit Technology Corporation in 2000, and acquired by Autodesk in 2002. The software allows users to
design a building and structure and its components in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements,
and access building information from the building model’s database. Revit is 4D building information
modeling capable with tools to plan and track various stages in the building’s lifecycle, from concept to
construction and later maintenance and/or demolition.

From the outset, Revit was intended

to allow architects and other building
professionals to design and document a
building by creating a parametric three-
dimensional model that included both
the geometry and non-geometric design
and construction information, which
is also known as Building Information
Modeling or BIM (1975 Eastman C.).
At the time, several other software
packages—such as ArchiCAD and
Reflex—provided a three-dimensional
virtual building model, and let the user control individual components via parameters (parametric
components). Two key differences in Revit were that users created parametric components in a graphical
“family editor” rather than a programming language, and the model captured all relationships between
components, views, and annotations so that a change to any element automatically propagated to keep
the model consistent. For example, moving a wall updated neighboring walls, floors, and roofs, corrected
the placement and values of dimensions and notes, adjusted the floor areas reported in schedules, redrew
section views, etc.—so that the model remained connected and all documentation was coordinated. The
concept of bi-directional associativity between components, views, and annotations was a distinguishing
feature of Revit for many releases. The ease of making changes inspired the name Revit, a contraction
of Revise-Instantly. At the heart of Revit is a parametric change propagation engine that relied on a new
technology, context-driven parametrics, that was more scalable than the variational and history-driven
parametrics used in mechanical CAD software. The term Parametric Building Model was adopted to reflect
the fact that changes to parameters drove the whole building model and associated documentation, not
just individual components.

TOOLS & FUNCTIONS OF REVIT

Revit has some tools and functions that work differently from other software. Learn what’s different
and how these functions can help you build faster and more efficiently.

NAVIGATION

You can use the mouse wheel, Project Browser, or ViewCube to open a view and navigate
to different areas of the model.

SELECTING ELEMENTS

Modify tool to select elements and sets of elements in a model.

THE PROJECT BROWSER

Located on the lower left of your Revit screen, the Project Browser acts as a table of
contents for your project. Use it to navigate and open views of the model. You can organize, sort, filter, and
customize the Project Browser to support your workflow.

THE PROPERTIES PALETTE

The Properties palette lets you view and modify parameters for selected
elements. If no element is selected, it displays the properties of the current view. The palette
appears by default to the left of the drawing area above the Project Browser. You can undock
the Properties palette so that it floats anywhere in the drawing area or on the desktop. You can
also dock it to any edge of the drawing window or combine it with the Project Browser to save
space.

VISIBILITY AND GRAPHICS SETTINGS

The visibility and graphics settings of a view determine whether elements and categories are
visible and how they’re displayed (color, line weight, line style, and so on). To modify the appearance and
visibility of individual elements, right-click an element in the drawing area and use the context menu.

TEMPORARY DIMENSION

As you create or select geometry, Revit displays temporary dimensions around the element.

You can use temporary dimensions to dynamically control the placement of elements. Learn more about
Temporary Dimensions in this video.

LEVEL

Levels are finite horizontal planes that act as references for level-hosted elements, such as
roofs, floors, and ceilings.

CONCLUSION

What type of BIM Software would you want to learn and why?

First of all, I have to depend on computer’s specifications because some softwares does not meet
the computer’s requirements, there are times that it causes a problem such as software crash, malware
attack and registry file problem that is corrupt and cause the computer to shut down.

However, based on the question asked, I prefer to learn not only Autodesk Revit but any other
softwares that are available in the market and worldwide such as ArchiCAD, Rhinoceros, Vectorworks, etc,
because architecture nowadays is quite evolving as technology does. We need to engage on multimedia
architecture in all around us technology, revolutionizing the way we live, work, play and communicate. It is
happening so quickly that it becomes hard to remember what it was like before the Internet, smart phones
and wireless data. At the same time, there are significant technologies emerging that are set to enhance our
increasingly digital civilization. As we noticed that architecture is in the middle of its huge transformation
since the introduction of computers. Along with that comes the adoption of new technologies. Advances in
digital design tools, inter-connectedness and computer-controlled fabrication are converging to transform
every phase of the design and build process. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a simple enough
idea, a single digital model of a building that everyone (architect, client, suppliers, builders, environmental
managers) can work on. The technology is more about process than product. But even that could lead to
a different sort of building.

Implementing building information modeling is much more of a business decision than a technical
one. BIM is an enabling technology with the potential for improving communication among business
partners, improving the quality of information available for decision making, improving the quality of
services delivered, reducing cycle time, and reducing cost at every stage in the life cycle of a building.
But while it opens the door to these possibilities, it does not make them happen. The technology must be
deployed as part of a comprehensive business strategy in order to be successful. Many business processes
and workflows must change to take full advantage of the technology.

Therefore, as an architecture student, I literally want to learn, engage practicing on BIM by using
different softwares as much as I want to determine how it works, what are the process, what are the
difference when it comes to use tools in most softwares consisting BIM that are used in different architectural
firms to help analyze and augment in my designs. And to demonstrate how to create robust and accurate
documentation and then a guide through the construction process. Whenever possible.
