GRADED: Due 4/1 Waves on a String 2021 Unit 12

Name: _______________________

Date: _______________________

1. Open the Wave on a String Simulation:

https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/wave-on-a-
string/latest/wave-on-a-string_en.html
2. Set the simulation to Oscillate (top left)
3. Set the simulation to No End (top right)
4. Set damping slider to None and tension slider to High
(bottom middle)
5. Check the box for Rulers (bottom right)
*Note: The wave can be PAUSED and then STEPPED one frame
at a time with the controls at the bottom of the screen. Doing
this will help in getting a good wave shape to measure a
wavelength.
1 Click the "oscillate button". How would you best describe
1 what is happening?

The string goes up and down in a waveform moving to

the right

The string goes up and down in a waveform moving to

the left

The string goes up and down in a waveform with no

direction left or right

2 Move the Frequency and Amplitude sliders to the numbers

1 shown in the screen shot (Amplitude .75 cm AND Frequency
1.5 Hz). Let the wave run for a few seconds and then pause
the waves and use the ruler to measure the wavelength.
What is the wavelength? (Round to the nearest WHOLE
NUMBER)

2 cm

3 cm

4 cm
3 Using the wavelength and frequency (remember you set the
1 frequency in the controls) for the above question, what is the
wave speed?

0.375 cm/s

1.875 cm/s

2.67 cm/s

6 cm/s

4 Move the Frequency and Amplitude sliders to the numbers

1 shown in the screenshot (Amplitude 1.25 cm and Frequency
1.5 Hz). Let the wave run for a few seconds and then pause
the waves and use the ruler to measure the wavelength.

14 How does changing the Frequency a ect the wavelength?
1

Higher frequency = Lower Wavelength

Higher frequency = Higher Wavelength

Higher frequency = Same Wavelength (no change)

15 How does changing the Amplitude a ect the wavelength?

1

Higher amplitude = Lower Wavelength

Higher amplitude = Higher Wavelength

Higher amplitude = Same Wavelength (no change)

16 How does changing the Frequency a ect the wave speed?

1

Higher frequency = Lower Wave speed

Higher frequency = Higher Wave speed

Higher frequency = Same Wave speed (no change)

17 How does changing the Amplitude a ect the wave speed?

1

Higher amplitude = Lower Wave speed

Higher amplitude = Higher Wave speed

Higher amplitude = Same Wave speed (no change)

18 What is the relationship between wavelength and frequency?

1
Inverse relationship: the higher the frequency, the
shorter the wavelength

Direct relationship: the higher the frequency, the

longer the wavelength

No relationship at all
