Sample poem: I Am From

I am from books,
from Vicks Vaporub and Pac-Man.
I am from the land of sunshine, eared hats, Gators and Seminoles,
from rotting oranges on the ground -
soft and fuzzy, they explode when they hit the enemy in after-school wars.
I am from the pink crepe myrtle tree, meticulously trimmed by my father,
that bloomed outside my bedroom window all summer all childhood long.
I'm from Santa surprises and sun freckles,
from Chris and Bobbie.
I'm from pizza Fridays and chore Saturdays,
from “You can do anything!” and “We are so proud of you.”
I'm from grace before dinner at Grammy and Pop’s house, a prayer I
heard countless times and never memorized.
I'm from the chain lakes, fish cooked a hundred ways and oranges picked
right from the tree for dessert, sticky juice dripping off our chins,
from my mother, who nurtured her own love of travel and adventure so
she could pass it to me,
and my father, who showed me that it is okay to stumble and fall so long
as you get back up and keep going.
On the hallway wall behind the dining room were framed photographs of
smiling faces from many years,
symbols of youth and dreams and those I love the most.
I am Ms. Bumgarner from Winter Park, Florida.
