The past simple of regular verbs

Hello everybody

The past simple is the most common way of talking about past events that
are before now. So are you with me? Are you ready to learn this tense? Let’s
get started:

First, it’s necessary to know certain expressions to talk about the past.

For example:

. Yesterday
. last night / week / year
. in 1998.
. (5 days) ago

Here we have a timeline, here we have “now”, everything before now is in the
past tense. Past simple talks about something that happened in the past and
it’s over.

2018 Now (2020)

Look at this sample:

The action started in the past and ended in the past.

AFFIRMATIVE FORM

When we work with Regular verbs we add -ed to the base form of the verb.
For Example:

start → started
work → worked
jump → jumped

But there are some exceptions:

1. You add –d when the verb ends in -e,

agree → agreed
like → liked
escape → escaped

2. When from the end of the verb we have a CVC, we doble the last
letter and then add “ed”.

stop → stopped
plan → planned

3. When we have a verb that ends in a “y”and has a consonat before it,
then you cancel the “y” and add “ied”

try → tried
carry → carried

But when you have a vowel before -y, you add -ed.

play → played
enjoy → enjoyed
Note: See that the past simple form doesn't change at all for I, you, he, she, we
and they. It is the same.

I Worked

He
She Worked
It

We
You Worked
They

NEGATIVE FORM

In negative sentences, we can use the contraction form:

Did + not = Didn’t

Let’s change these sentences into negative:

They stayed at the hotel.

They didn’t stay at the hotel.

Susan played with her friends last Sunday.

Susan didn’t play with her friends last Sunday.

REMEMBER:

THESE SENTENCES…….. ARE WRONG

-I DIDN’ T MET NEW PEOPLE LAST WEEK.
-I DIDN’T WENT TO THE DISCO LAST NIGHT
