M6 POST TASK

1. Describe the research article.

The research article "Enantioseparation of (RS)-Zopiclone using amino acid by thin-layer

chromatography" is a study conducted by Manisha Singh of the Department of Chemistry at
Lovely Professional University, PB, India. Volume V, Issue 10, published in October 2018 at
www.jetir.org. Zopiclone, which is an antidepressant drug, is the core topic of study. The article
includes experiments such as isolation, purification, and TLC in order to distinguish and come up
with a reliable method for separating the compounds found in the drug that are enantiomers and
enantioseparation. Overall, the article mainly discusses the utilization of thin-layer
chromatography technique.

2. Discuss how any of these chromatographic techniques is applied in the research study.
Thin Layer Chromatography is the technique utilized in this analysis. The separation was
conducted using L-tryptophan direct amino acid as chiral reagents using two separate
approaches. In approach A, the amino acid was impregnated in the TLC plates and the resolution
of the racemic zopiclon was performed using different achiral solvent systems. In approach B,
where a certain chiral mobile phase was prepared and the separation was carried out by adding
an appropriate quantity of chiral selector to the ternary solvent form.

3. Is the technique applied gave very good results to the study? Explain in (2) sentences.
TLC is known for its reliability compared to paper chromatography, but this all depends on the
researcher's application of this process. In this research article, the TLC method was successfully
performed by showing two different potential approaches and it was concluded that Approach A
achieved a better separation and resolution compared to Approach B.
