Question #1
1a. Firstly, water molecules are polar, meaning that they are very good solvents. In biological terms,
this is very important as it makes water a good component of blood because if a compound dissolves
easily on water, it means that it can usually be transported by blood. Water's role as a solvent help
cells on the blood transport, absorb and use different substances or nutrients. As blood is a water-
based substance, it helps carry various molecules to the necessary locations. Thanks to water's
solubility, ionic compounds and polar ones, such as glucose, amino acids, sodium chloride and
carbon dioxide can be dissolved in the blood.

1b. Dipeptides are produced by condensation reactions. Firstly, two amino acids bind through
condensation to form a dipeptide (covalent bond between amino acids). Then, the carboxyl group
loses a hydroxyl and the amino group loses a hydrogen atom for the formation of a water molecule.

1c. HD and LD lipoproteins have the role of transporting fats and cholesterol through the body. High
density lipoproteins lower blood cholesterol and they transport it from the tissues of the body into the
liver. On the other hand, low density lipoproteins raise blood cholesterol levels and they counteract
the work of HDL by transporting cholesterol through the blood to all the body.
