KINS 4306 Internship Spring 2021

1/24/21

Weekly Journal #1

For the first week of my internship, I was not able to do exactly what I wanted yet. Due

to COVID-19 the other interns and I were only allowed to join the zoom from 9-3 on Monday to

Thursday. We would observe, interact, and participate in the activities with the adults and make

sure that people were in their appropriate activities. We were told to get covid tests in order to

attend the building, so the other interns and I will be able to come to the building the upcoming

week. Some examples of activities we did on zoom with the others were music playing, dancing,

brain games, and others. Personally I felt like joining zoom was not the best because we aren’t

technically in person and aren’t helping out in the best way to possibly could, but I am excited to

come to the LEC tomorrow and begin on my projects and activities. Since we were on zoom

most of the week, we were actually allowed to come Thursday from 12-2 and do a MLK video

and perform a activity with the group. Our video just consisted of a 30 second explanation on

what we will be doing this semester on improving the facility and education on the adults with

disabilities. One thing that I did learn for my first week of internships is that you must be patient

and respectful towards the people. I already knew about this because I did my service hours last

semester for LEC so I have a good understanding on how the program is run. I think it is

important though to make the biggest impact that I can onto these people so that they can learn

how to do certain things on their own or in their everyday life. Personally I feel like this is a

great opportunity for me to improve on my communication and leadership skills for my future

career. My older sister actually graduated from GCSU as an occupational therapist so I

understand what she does and how to learn and grow from it. But I am very excited to continue

my internship there and grow more as a person and mentor.
