everyone have their own definition and goal?

Fillar: Here’s some questions that I want you to be

thinking about.

Pause

Fillar: So first of all, what were some of the things

that you wrote down? You can just throw them in
the chat and I’ll read them off.

Pause

Fillar: It’s okay if it’s not necessarily what you think Fillar uses finger
is “right” but what are some of the things? quotations to
emphasize the word
Pause to check chat “right”

Fillar: Alright we have to achieve your dream. So is S (Direct Message) : to achieve your dream
that what the American Dream sounds like it is?
Pause to wait for response in chat

Fillar: Also remember to put this in the full chat so

Mrs. Murphy can see it too. And everyone else! I’m
getting a lot of private chats right now.

B: It won’t let us put it in the public chat, the only

option is to message it to you.

Fillar: What! Why is that happen- ohhh. Okay, try it Students giving D (Direct Message): I was thinking that American dream is being financially free
now. I don’t know why it did that. Thank you for thumbs up to show M (Direct Message) : I wrote some different definitions of what they said
letting me know! Um… Alright so we have that the they can chat A(Direct Message) : to come to America and get more freedom to do what you are
American Dream is being financially free. Um, good at
some different definitions. So what were some of
those different definitions? Can you share those?

Pause to check chat

Fillar: We have come to America and get more Fillar reading A: Less than half of people achieve their goal

Less than half of people achieve their goal or (because students D: I was thinking that American dream is being financially free

great answers! Coming to America is part of that S: No boundaries
American Dream. Yep. The belief that American is
the golden country of endless possibilities- nice!
Have a great family and have the ability to make
them happy. Achieving your goals in a free and
non- excuse me- in a free and non-judgmental
environment, no boundaries. Alright, you guys
are awesome at this! Have an idea of what you
want in life and the freedom to do this.

Fillar: So, I guess we can kind of combine those Shifting from the
first two points we wrote down on the PowerPoint chat to the
slide, which was some of the notes you wrote down PowerPoint slides
and then based off of the video, how you would
define the American Dream. So if you had to define
it yourself, not based off of that video, what do we
think the American Dream is in your eyes- the way
that you see it? So, for some of you, that might not
mean having a family down the line or you know,
getting married or whatever it is, that might just
mean getting your dream job. That just might mean
having financial stability. So you don’t have to
necessarily put what your own American Dream is,
but just what you think it is based off of the video.

Fillar: I don’t know if I said this one yet, to have an Shifting back to the J: To have an idea on what you want in life, and have the freedom to do it.
idea of what you want in life and having the chat M (Direct Message) : having a stable job and feeding yourself and your family
freedom to do it. Having a stable job and feeding
yourself and your family. Good. What else do we
have?

Pause to wait for responses

Fillar: If you work hard enough and you have goals, S: If you work hard enough and have goals than you can work towards that goal and
then you can work towards that goal and have a have a stable life
stable life. So, I feel like the word that we’re really M: To work hard and have money to pay for more than needed so you can thrive
focusing on is stable. And I think that that’s good instead of survive
that we all have a similar idea. To work hard and
have money to pay for more than needed so you
can thrive instead of survive, I like that! Another
good one.

Pause to shift to next point

Fillar: So you can keep on throwing those in the B: the American dream is a metaphor
chat but we’re going to move into our last point
here. Does it sound like the American Dream is set
to one specific goal or does everyone have their
own goal and definition? Oh, that’s great. The
American Dream is a metaphor. Yes! That’s
something that I don’t think a lot of people think
about.

Pause to read responses

Fillar: Having their own definition. Yeah, it didn’t M:Have there own definition
really sound like any of those people that they M: Everyones different
interviewed had the exact same American Dream, E: everyone has their own definition
or the exact same definition. So I guess it is A: they have their own definition
different in everyone’s eyes. Mhm. Everyone’s goal J: Everyone's goal is different yet it could be the same idea
is different yet it could be the same idea. So people
can have the same goals, but not everyone has to
have the same American Dream. That’s sort of the
point we’re getting across here.

Fillar: So what we’re gonna talk about now, just

very briefly, is we are heading into reading slash
watching parts of the movie for a book called Of
Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. So in this book,
we see the idea of the American Dream during the
time of the Depression. So, the idea of the
American Dream is just reaching your goal in life
and the characters in that book have very specific
goals, and you will see that once we get started
with our reading.
