Climate
In winter, the thermometer rarely drops below 15 degrees Celsius below zero, while in summer the
average temperatures fluctuate between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius. Despite its mountainous location,
the mild climate is strongly influenced by the southerly wind (Föhn).
The national dish is 'Ribel', made out of cornmeal or wheat semolina. 'Käsknöpfle', a type of doughy
pasta covered in melted cheese, is also popular. In years gone by, cider and wine were the main
drinks, while a brewery also produced beer.
The name 'Liechtenstein' was given to the region by the Princes of Liechtenstein, who purchased the
County of Vaduz (1712) and the lands of Schellenberg (1699) and united them to form the Principality
of Liechtenstein in 1719. The name of the eponymous princely house can be traced back to a castle in
the town of Maria Enzensdorf in Upper Austria. Built by Hugo von Petronell-Liechtenstein around 1130,
this castle is said to stand on a rock known as the light ('Licht') stone ('Stein').
Souvenirs
Wine, ceramics, stamps, Confectionery, Swarovski crystal figures, literature about Liechtenstein,
watches, jewelry, etc. Or get a souvenir stamp in your passport at one of the information offices.
Vaduz Castle
You have to see this sight! Vaduz Castle sits about 120 meters above the capital Vaduz. It is the
landmark of the capital of Liechtenstein and can be seen from afar. Today it is inhabited by the royal
family.
On our country tour on Wednesday afternoon we will drive to Vaduz Castle. There we have the
opportunity to take pictures in the garden.
City of Vaduz
Vaduz is the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein, the seat of the authorities and the state
parliament, and since 1939 also the princely residence. The town is the center of Vaduz.
Whether for shopping, strolling, indulging in culinary delights or enjoying culture: The small town in the
center of Vaduz is the pulsating heart in the middle of Liechtenstein. The pedestrian zone from the
government quarter to the Vaduz town hall is traffic-free. There are six larger museums in Vaduz. From
the Historical State Museum to the Contemporary Art Museum, you can spend a lot of time in a small
space.
The Grossabünt in Gamprin invites you to swim. Admission to the swimming lake is free of charge.
Grossabünt can be reached by bus from the Musikschulzentrum Eschen or from Schellenberg in
approx. 30 minutes.
The Mühleholz swimming pool is located between the municipalities of Vaduz and Schaan on Schaaner
Strasse. It is a true adventure pool: Water slide, wave pool, diving platform, children's pool, sports pool,
massage jets.
The hiking trail can be reached within a few minutes from the accommodation in Schellenberg. Through
the forest you pass historic sites of Liechtenstein and to great places with a view over the whole
country.
