It spay be used by merely inserting the following paragraph(s) into the project specifications. SHORT FORM FIELD TESTING SPECIFICATION 1, Fenestration product(s) shal be field tested in accordance with AMA $02-02, *Vehintary Specification for Field Testing of Windows and Sliding Glass Doors," using Test Method, (Insert A or B) SPECIPIER NOTE: Test Method A shall he used unless Test Method B is selected here. See Section 2.0 for descriptions of both test methods. AAMA S02-02 specifies air leakage resistance and water penetration resistance JSield testing for one (1) fenestration product as soon as possible after installation begins and the selected “fenestration product ts determined to be ready for testing. Deft gerfrmance requirement for air lake resistance and vater penetration resistance are provided in Section 46.and47 SPECTFIER NOTE: For projects with less than 109 feneviration openings one field test sample is normally suficient. Any of the following optional paragraphs may be added to modify the standard specification, however, consideration shold be given 10 the cast of additional resting 2. Test __% (1% unless otherwise specified) of the fenestraticn products for sir leakage resistance and water penetration resistance as specified at various stages of the product installation. Specificrnote: Ifthe tested fenestration Droduct fils to comply with the project requirements consideration should be given to the selection and testing of additional fenestration products 3. Air leakage resistance tests shall be conducted ata uniform static test pressure of __Pa (___psf). The maximum allowable rate of air leakage shell not exceed _ Lisenr? (___ fin’). 4. Water penctration resistance tests shall be conducted ata satic test pressure of __Pa (____psf). No water ‘penetration shall occur as defined in Section 4.11 of AAMA.502-02, 1,0 SCOPE AND PURPOSE 1.4 These specifications establish the requirements for field test specimens, apparatus, sampling, test procedures and test repats to be used in verifjing the air inSltration resistance performance and water penetration resistance performance of installed new windows and sliding glass doors (hereafter referred to as "fonestation predines"). Verifying the structural loading resistance pecformance of fenestration products is beyend the scope of this specificatin. This specification is applicable fer testing during the constuction process and. prior to final acceptance by the owner. If this procedure is adapted for field testing of fenestration products afte: completion end final acceplanee by the owner, it shall be necessary to inspect the fenestation product prior to testing. Repair and/or replacement of damaged or deteriorated components, may be necessary, and shall be done by the responsible contacter(s). Refer to Section 3.41 1.2 The purpose of these specifications is to provide a tide, which can te used to evaluate the installed performance of fenestration products. for air leskage resistanco and water _penesration resistance under controllable and reproducible conditions 13 The primary units of measure in this document are metric. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as, the standard. The values given in parentheses are for reference only. 2.0 TEST METHODS 2.1 The field proceduce and test apparatus shall meet the requirements of ASTM E 783 and ASTM E 1105, NOTE: Two test methods are described below including the limitations of each. The methods differ in the location of the chamber perimeter line and, therefore, whether or riot the perimeter seals, subframe/receptor system, and Jrame corners are subjected to the specified pressure differertial. Ifnot specified otherwise, Text Method A shall be the default. Test Method B is permitied to be specified ty 30 noting in the Short Form Field Testing Specification, 2.2 Test Method A (Figure 1) ‘Test Method A is atest ofthe fenestration produet within the confines of the perimeter of the main frame. Test specimens shall consist of the fenestration product as installed on the exterior of a building. If exterior screens ‘re specified, they shall be in place daring testing, Excluded in Test Method Aare any joints, cracks or ‘openings between the fenestration prot andthe adjacent ‘wall construction. The test charmber shall be attached tothe inside fice of the main ffame to create 2 pressure differential across the fenestration product within the confines of the main fiame, (See Figure 1) Only the operable cloments (sash, vents, panels) and fixed lazing components shall be tested under the specified pressure for sir leakage resistance and water penctration resistance, NOTE: Non-structural interior rim and related items shall be removed as necessary to permit visual checks for water penetration through or around the fenestration product exterior panning, subframe andior receptor system. Specifically excluded from (or not measured by) Test Method A is “wall cavity" air that may be drawn from adjacent consimiction through "holes" in the fenestration product frame system or around interior trim and maullion covers. The design profesional should review the shop drawings and the test specimens 0 sce that the fenestration product manufacturer and insiallation contractor have taken adequate steps to seal balance clip holes, mounting fasteners, interior trin, mullion covers, self stacking ‘window jambs and any other detail rhat may pernit wall cavity air leakage past the interior plane of the glazing and/or framing. FOR WATER PENETRATION (REFERENCE PARAGRAPH 4.11) CALIBRATED WATER SPRAY RACK FIGURE I: TEST METHOD A The chamber attachment specified for Test Method A will not test the ffame comer seals and perimeter members under pressure, Such elements, especially the bottom corners and sills, if improperly sealed may cause uncontrolled water penetration, This limitation of Test Method A. should be eleasly understood by the specifying authority, architect or owners representative atthe time the specifications are prepared. Since ft is not practical to test these elements by this method, the following optional test (see Figure 2A, 2B and 2C) is prmited to be added to Paragraph 4 of the Short Foon Field Testing Specification Optional Sill Dam Test Fenestration product sills and subfeame/teceptor aysterns shall have a static water head bight equal to the specified test Pressure. (See Figure 2A for calculation of static water head). ‘This shall permit plugging weep holes oc building an exterior dam to hold water to the required dept, No water penetration as defined in Section 4.11 shall occur. SPECIFIER NOTE: This optional water test requires the removal of interior finishes around the bottom of the fenestration praduct frame, The cost associated with the removal and replacement of the interior finishes must be understood and assigned prior to specifing thie optional water test. rane WareRneaD Hea ‘MENGURED FRO BUTT CPESTRII SEE taressnuen Ove ENTENGR AEE SUAYIC WATER HAD (gum) = 0.102 SPECIBLED ‘TEST PRESSURE (Ps) STATIC WATER HEAD (insher) ~ 0.192 s SPECIFIED TEST PRESSURE (psf) FIGURE 2A APPLIED ENTERIOR DAM TAPE APPLIED OFERENTERIOR WEEE STATIC WATER \ HEAD HETGUT 1 a FIGURE 2S APPLIED EXTERIOR DAM \ tareaveuen eae FIGURE ZC ALTERNATE Test CHAMBER = 70 OUTSIDE BAROMETRIC FUSSURE pavies, PRESSURE. oun WANE ° TEST CHAMBER EXHAUST tat ( y AIR SYSTEM INNERMOST PLANE FOR WATER PENETRATION (rerenence PARAGRAPH 4.1) CALIBRATED WATER SPRAY RACK FIGURES: TEST METHODB 2.3 Test Method B (Figure 3) Test Method B is a test ofthe fenestration product inclusive of the foint between the fenesration product and the rough ‘opening, The test area shall consist of the fenestration product 28 insalled on the exterior of a building inclusive ofall joint, ‘racks or openings between the fenestration product and adjacent wall construction, The test chamber shall be applied to the wall construction in such a manner as to create a pressure differential across the entise fenestration product (including subframelreceptor and/or panning) and the pecieter seals. If exterior sereens are specifiod they shall be in place during testing. NOTE: This test rcthod insures that the entire fenestration product (including the frame, corners, panning, subframereceptor system, ete.) and the adjacent substrate including the perimeter seals are all tested under the prescribed pressure differential. Testing shall be performed as soon as ‘possible after the fenestration products) are insalted and prior {othe installation of drywall or wall material. Ifimteror welt ‘materials have been installed they shall be removed atthe test area to allow visual access 10 these arcas to check for water ‘penetration, or other means of visual access shall be provided. The test chamber shall be applied 10 the wall system in suck 2 ‘manner @s to apply a pressure diferental to all joinery conditions and minimize extraneous air leakage. (See Section 45 for a detiled descrition of extroncous air leakage) In the case of a stud wall system, the test chamber perimeter line, if installed on the building interior, would normally be taped to suds on both sides ofthe fenestration product and at the head and sill rama. Caulking would be required at the joinery between the stud framing and sheathing board or exterior wall to limit exiraneous alr leakage. On a precast wall system. @ chamber installed on the interior can be seated directly 10 the back of the precast. Tests on a segment of continuous horizontal strip fenestration products shall Include adequate measures 10 properly seal horizontal head recepiors and sill lrters so that extrancous alr leakage is minimized. 3,0 SAMPLING 341 As soon as practical after insallation bas began, and & representative mumber of fenestration products have been completely installed, adjusted, cleaned and perimeter scaled one prsiuct stall be tested for air leakage reistnee and water penetration resistance as specified in Seaton 4. NOTE: Performing the test as soa as practical onthe job site may be beneficial in determining if manufecturing, installation and/or perimeter sealing problems are present before 0 substontal portion of the project & completed. Necessary corrections can be made without significant finarcial impact on ony of the responsible partis. On large projects tighter construction monitoring may. be performed by testing of approximate intervals of 3% 50% ‘ard 909% completion ofthe installation. On jobs with fewer ‘han 100 products, one field tex sample as specified above should sffice. fore than the one products specified for testing, the actual nuanber of products and intervals of est shall be stipulated in Parograph J ofthe Short Form Field Testing Specification. 32 IF any of the fenestration products under test ful to meet the prescribed air leakage resistance and water ‘penetration resistance specifications, the reason for failure shall be determined by the responsible party and failed {fenestration products of installation shall be repaired ad retested, The remedial work shall be recorded and approved by the specifying authority, architect and/or ‘owner. Upon satisfactorily passing a retest, the fenestration ‘product or installation deficiencies shall become punch list items to check on the entice project. 3.3. The project specifcations shall clearly identify the ‘party responsible for the costs associated with the initial ficld testing and rtesting (if necessary), 34 Testing shall be perfirmed by an AAMA accredited testing agency, NOTE! AAMA accredited laboratories are required to comply with AAMA 204-98 "Guidelines for AAMA Accreditation of Independent Laboratories Performing On- site Testing of Fenestration Products.” The requirement of AAMA accreditation assures the specifier that the laboratory has the staff, training experience, and calibrated equipment to property perform fed testing 3.4.1 The sponser of the field testing shall be responsible for notification of the test schedule to the fenestration ‘product installation contractor. The advance notice shall be adequate forthe contractor to notify all fenestration product trades (ic,, manufcturer, ereetor, glazier, perimeter caulk ‘contractor, ec.) ofthe test date, 35. Fenestration product(s) selected for testing, shall ‘conform to the following: 3.51 Fenestration preciuet(s) location shall be selected by the architect or owners representative unless delegated to the AAMA accredited testing agency. 3.52 The fenestration product(s) shall be representative samples of typical installations fox the project. The fenestration product(s) shall have no outstancing punch list items, visible damage, nor be singled out because of obviovs performance problems. f problems with a fenestration product installation are observed they shall be ‘brought to the responsible contractor's attention and added to tho project punch list 3.53 After the fenestration product(s) locations have been selected, the owners sepresentative sball direct the responsible contractor, if necessary, to clean the fenestration product(s) and remove adjoining molding, insulation o other materials that could affoct the test results, The designated fenestration product(s) shall be ingpceted to verify that it was installed according to the fenestration product manufacturer's installation instructions oF por the approved shop drawings.
