The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

(JONG) Once upon a time, in West Java, there lived a wise king who had a beautiful daughter.
Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She liked weaving very much. One day, she was weaving a
piece of cloth. Suddenly, one of her tools fell to the ground. She was very tired at the time so
she was too lazy to pick it up. Then she shouted out loud.

(VELA) “Anybody there? Please bring me my tool and I will give you a special present! If
you are a female, I will consider you as my sister. If you are a male, I will marry you.”

(IQI) Suddenly a male dog named Tumang came. He brought her tool to her. Dayang Sumbi
was shocked. She regretted her words but she could not deny it. So, she had to marry Tumang
and leave her father. Then they lived in a small village. Several months later they had a son.
His name was Sangkuriang. He was a handsome and healthy boy. Sangkuriang liked hunting
very much. He often went hunting to the woods using his bow and arrow. When he went
hunting, Tumang is always with him.

(IQI) One day, Dayang Sumbi was in a mood to eat a deer’s heart.

(VELA) “Sangkuriang, are you going hunting today? I want to eat a deer’s heart so much. Can
you please bring me one?” asked Dayang Sumbi.

(DIDIK) “Of course, mom. Whatever you want, I will give it to you. Tumang, where are you?
Come on, we have to hunt for a deer!”

(JONG) Then, Sangkuriang went to the woods with his bow and arrow with his faithful dog,
Tumang. But after several days in the woods, Sangkuriang could not find any deers. They
were all nowhere to be found. Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate.
(DIDIK) “Oh God, where can I find a deer? I don’t want to disappoint my mom. Oh! I
know!”

(IQI) Sangkuriang then called Tumang to come and killed him. He did not know that
Tumang was his father, so he killed Tumang without any hesitation. When he reached home,
he gave Tumang’s heart to his mother without any ounce of regret.

(VELA) “Sangkuriang! Are you sure this is a deer’s heart? Don’t you dare lie to me! It is
Tumang’s heart, isn’t it? Why did you kill him!?” said Dayang Sumbi full of anger. She hit
Sangkuriang’s head. Sangkuriang was wounded by the impact. There was a scar in his head.
She also kicked her son out of her house. Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.

(JONG) Many years passed and Sangkuriang grew to become a strong young man. He
wandered everywhere around the world. One day, he arrived at his own village but he did not
realized it. There, he met Dayang Sumbi. At the time when he met Dayang Sumbi, she was
given eternal beauty by God, therefore she stayed young forever. Both of them did not know
each other. So, they fell in love and then they decided to get married.

(JONG) But then, Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head.

(VELA) “Sangkuriang, why there is a scar on your head?”

(DIDIK) “Oh, when I was a child, my mom hit me on my head.”

(IQI) Dayang Sumbi was very shocked. She now knew that strong young man was his son. It
was impossible for them to get married. She told him but he did not believe her. Sangkuriang
wished that they could get married soon. So, Dayang Sumbi gave him a very difficult
condition.

(VELA) “Sangkuriang, if you want to marry me, I have a condition for you. I want you to build
a lake and a big boat in ONLY one night. I need them for our honeymoon. Can you do that?”

(DIDIK) “What!? Impossible! But, it’s okay. I will do anything for you.”

(JONG) With the help of genies and spirits, Sangkuriang then began to build a lake and a big
boat in one night. By midnight, he had finished the lake by building a dam in Citarum river.
Then he started building the boat. It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it. Meanwhile,
Dayang Sumbi kept watching on them. She was very worried when she knew this. So she
created lights in the east.

(DIDIK) “Huh? Troops! stop your work! It’s already dawn. The sun will rise soon. Quickly,
go home, go home!” said the chair of the genies. They left Sangkuriang alone.

(VELA) “Sangkuriang, you couldn’t fulfil my conditions. Unfortunately that means we can’t
get married.. I hope you can understand that.”

(DIDIK) “You cheated! You made the light to trick my troops! Because of that, I could not
fulfil your conditions!”

(IQI) Sangkuriang was very angry, so he kicked the boat and flipped it. Then the boat turned
upside down. So to this day, from now on, that upside down boat is known famously known
as Tangkuban Perahu, which means upside down boat.
