2. Do you think the parents made a mistake in operating on Lulu’s fingers? Why or why not?

 The parents did not make a mistake in operating Lulu’s fingers because they did that for her
welfare. They made that decision in order for Lulu to live a normal life without anyone
discriminating her for having six fingers on each hand. Their only mistake was that they didn’t
ask Lulu’s consent if she would allow the operation. Although Lulu was young when they did the
operation, they should have waited for her to grow up and let her understand her situation.
They could have done the operation when she’s old enough and when she has agreed to it.

4. Why did the narrator dislike the way her mother described reproduction?

 She did not like it because her mother made it sound like she would not be in this world without
her parents. Her mother made her feel like a mindless blob that couldn’t do anything without
their guidance. She made her feel that she is useless without them. It seemed like her mother
didn’t trust her that she can do anything independently.

6. What does it mean that the narrator wanted to be true to herself?

 She wanted to be true to herself when she found out that she had once possessed an extra
finger on each hand. It means that she needs time to reflect whether she would have allowed
the operation if only she was asked by her parents, or she would have accepted herself despite
having extra fingers. She wants to measure if her parents’ decision is fine with her.

8. Do you think the narrator is selfish? Why or Why not?

 She is not selfish. She just knows her value as a human person. She wants to be true to herself
and to have the rights to her own body. I think it is not being selfish when one wants to take
care of his/her body. It’s the narrator’s body; she gets to choose whether to change it or not.
Either way, she has to accept and love her body because that’s what makes her unique.

10. Do childhood revelations have lasting impact on one’s life?

 Childhood revelations have lasting impact on one’s life. Our childhood experiences shape who
we are today. Our earliest experiences may stick with us for years and continue to influence us.
These childhood revelations or experiences help us truly understand ourselves because these
serve as a connection of who we are from the past to the present.
