2. Include details on how design concept was refined (what feedback was incorporated, what
features are different than previous refined concept (initial prototype), etc.).
There are a couple features changed in the refined prototype, notably the device can now be
screwed to a base using a clamp so that the client can move the device to different places in her
studio where she places the base. This refinement came from Professor Bosco’s suggestion to
make the device more portable (portability is an objective of the design) as the original design had
a permanent, unattachable base that would be too heavy for the client to move (since 5-10 lbs is
the client's constraint to lift objects). The length of the tube that acts as the arm support for the
client was extended in length to fit the client’s forearm so that her arm could be fully supported
during painting (this was also a design objective). This refinement was made due to peer feedback.
Our group also decided on a cotton, removable lining to add to the arm support to make it
comfortable (objective) and washable as suggested by one of the science students.

3. Create a detailed prototype testing plan. (Max 500 words)
® Consider what is feasible with the resources you have
® “Testing” can include analytic solutions such as hand calculations, motion simulations
in Inventor
® Explore what you might do if you had more time, money, tools, etc.
® Use IEEE referencing if any research is done

Insert your Present Testing Plan (how you would test your prototype with the resources that you
have available).
Lightweight
Metric: Mass
We can test this by using the iProperties in inventor to find the volume of the parts of our design.
From there we can use Granta to find the density of the different materials for each part and
calculate mass by multiplying volume times density. Adding these calculated masses of the parts
should give us the total mass of the device. We are testing that the device is under 5lb.
Durability
Metric: Stress
This can be tested using stress analysis simulation in Inventor. This allows us to test the amount
of stress the bar can endure on its sides to make sure that the bar will not break from the rest of
the device or deflect too much.
Flexibility
Metric: Stiffness (lower is better)
The stiffness can be calculated using Hooke’s Law to determine how far the spring can be
stretched and the amount of force required to stretch the spring to a specific height.

Insert your Future Testing Plan (how you would test your prototype with the resources that you
do not currently have available but may have in the future).
Given more time and resources, our team would’ve been able to perform more tests on our
prototype. This would include physically building the prototype so we can test the mobility,
flexibility, strength, and stability of the design. With a physical prototype to test, we could test
whether the base support can withstand the weight of an arm when being used. We would also
be able to test the flexibility of the spring and the mobility of the spinning bar to ensure that it can

reach each part of the canvas. Furthermore, we can also test if the positioning of the arm
support and the cushion is comfortable for the client to paint with.

Team Member’s Full Name: Contribution:
Stephen Dorssers Developed the test plan for the Lightweight
metric. Refined the prototype by increasing
length of the arm support and adjusted how the
bar rotates around the hooked edge.
Chuyuan Xie Implemented the coil part in the prototype,
refined connection between the bar and the
base, assembled the prototype and made a
few final adjustments. Contributed to peer
feedback.
Danielle Fong Implemented the clamping mechanism to the
prototype.
Contributed to creating test plans for the
prototype.
Mohammad Muntazar Bhurwani Will be implementing idea from previous model
into refined prototype with open arm support.
Contributing to devising test plans and peer
feedback.

MILESTONE 4.2 – DESIGN REVIEW

Team Number: Mon-53

Include feedback from peers in this row.

Instead of an arm support that surrounds the whole forearm, one that only covers a half can reduce
the tightness, increase flexibility, and save the material. It will also have a soft and removable
lining to make it washable and comfortable enough. The spring can also be shortened so the arm
support can start at a higher point and can be stretched down using the spring.
Include feedback from science students in this row.
-It looks like it could be difficult to move it to a different spot or stand for the client
-It might be difficult for her to paint in different positions
-Would it be possible to clamp it to a canvas so that it can be painted vertically
-The bar could be shorter so that it can spin 360 degrees and it could be dangerous for her to have
a longer bar and this bar could
-It might be hard for the client to screw in the clamp to the base. Look into other ways to clamp the
device to the base such as push/pull
-The design is good and innovative
If applicable, include feedback from the client in this row.
