SUMMARY OF PUMA’S SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS ACROSS DIFFERENT YEARS

PUMA’s sustainability strategy over the years has been guided by its 10 for 20 action plan which
includes 10 sustainability targets- Social Compliance, Stakeholder Engagement, Corporate
Governance, Environmental P&L, Human Rights, Water & Air, Health & Safety, Climate, Chemicals
and Materials. PUMA has focused on integrating sustainability into its core business functions rather
than just a few sustainable products. PUMA is transparent about its sustainability efforts and
publishes its annual business and sustainability reports. It has an ideology that being sustainable is not
only good for the environment but also for the business itself. PUMA has been a member of numerous
industry collaborations to cover various environmental and social issues that need addressing in the
industry.
Commitment to the Environment- For example, in 2017, PUMA started taking an active role in the
industry-wide initiatives such as the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Foundations which aims
at eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals in its supply chain. It also made expanded its human
rights due diligence by making a human rights assessment in its supply chain and mapped the
potential risk areas in their logistics chain. PUMA has been devoted to using more sustainable
materials like BCI Cotton, bluesign polyester, and FSC certified cardboard. PUMA keeps a track of
its water usage and the sources it comes from and publishes the date for more transparency. It also has
a Code of Conduct that sets a clear minimum standard of sustainability for its suppliers. To address
climate change concerns, PUMA has set in place a science-based CO2 reduction targets that are to be
implemented year after year. It focuses on manufacturing its products by making its processes more
efficient, renewable and recyclable.
Commitment to People- PUMA believes in treating its employees like its family and is therefore
committed to providing safe and humane working conditions. It aims at achieving zero workplace
fatalities by making employees’ health and safety as one of the topmost priorities of its 10 for 20
action plan. It also trained its employees on anti-corruption policies. In 2019, as part of their social
compliance program, PUMA phased out recruitment fees for its migrant workers. PUMA makes sure
to include its stakeholders such as suppliers and consumers in its sustainable strategies by taking their
valuable feedback and conducting global round table conferences for its stakeholders.
OBSERVATIONS REGARDING PUMA’S SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS-
The analysis of its Environmental P&L that PUMA has been publishing since 2011 and covers water
use, air pollution and greenhouse emissions shows that the cost of keeping environment clean has
been going up over the years. Moreover, it was also found out that most of its environmental footprint
is embedded in its supply chain, especially across Asia and Latin America than in its own operations
and that is why, a lot of PUMA’s efforts have been focused on its supply chain. Even though it costs
more to procure recyclable and organic materials, PUMA has not backed down and achieved its
targets.
PUMA’s efforts in sustainability have been very thorough since it takes into account not only the
environmental concerns but also the human rights aspect. Although it has at times missed its zero fatal
accidents at work targets, but its commitment to human safety has been commendable. PUMA can
improve its efforts dedicated towards climate change as it was observed that it has missed its carbon
emissions targets a few times. All in all, PUMA’s efforts are appreciable and have helped it reduce its
environmental footprint by 15% since 2013.
Results- It scored 100% points in Governance and 97% in the Policy and Commitment Section in the
study published by Fashion Revolution. It also expanded its targets on making its materials
sustainable up to 90% when it reached its previous goals ahead of schedule. 10 factories failed to
enter PUMA’s supplier base because they failed the social audit conducted by PUMA. Its supply
chain team also tracked down 4 cases of zero tolerance where the cases were related to underpayment
of wages and they were asked to mend their ways immediately.
