Professional Meeting Reflection

Professional nursing meeting experience (4 hours)

Guide for Reflection Using Tanner’s (2006) Clinical Judgment Model
Introduction

What professional nursing meeting(s) did you attend and where was it located?
MRMC- Shared Governance- Recognition and Retention- Zoom
Background

Describe the purpose of this professional nursing meeting? Describe the agendas of the group and subgroup.
What type of issues did they address?

First, it was nice that the nursing students were mentioned and welcomed to the meeting. We were encouraged to
join committees at our hospital once we become nurses.

The purpose of this meeting was to not only discuss matter regarding employee retention, but to discuss programs,
talent accusation, addressing retention initiative and hiring of new employees.

One leader addressed the Carnation Care Giver award. This award is for any employee who is not a nurse. A council
votes on 3 different people. Managers are encouraged to vote and nominate employees. There is a Nursing
Professional Grant that is not being taken advantage of. According to the leader introducing this program, there is a
substantial amount of money avaialbe. Nurses can apply for grants to attend educational conference. It was brought
to our attention that due to COVID, in person conferences were not available; however, virtual seminars were being
offered at a reduced cost.

Talent acquisition is having 2 hiring events. In February they will be hiring PCT and approaching local nursing
schools. Currently there is a referral incentive program and a sign on bonus for nurses. The sign on bonus is $5,000.
Through retention initiative, they are collecting date from units. They are collecting data for 90 day turn over, 1
year turn over and voluntary turn over. Currently there is a 333% turn over rate on the cardiac unit; however, the
presenter feel sure that is not correct. A link to a survey called Measures of Healthy Work Environment will be sent
out to leaders on the zoom meeting.

Quarterly, a comfort cart is presented to a unit the council feels is in need of some TLC. This is an incentive to help
make staff feel appreciated and cared for.

Although many LPNs are leaving units, it was mentioned that they have been a big help to the nurses.

Noticing

What did you notice about the professional nursing meeting initially? Describe what you saw, heard and did
during the meeting?

Due to being on Zoom, I could not see everyone on the meeting. I could only hear the people presenting
information. I did notice that everyone was polite and professional. Anyone who wanted to ask question had the
opportunity.

While at the meeting, I inquired (via chat) who qualified as a “Carnation Care Giver.” I was answered immediately.
I listened and took notes on what was discussed.

Interpreting

Describe what you thought about the information being discussed. Have you been involved in similar
discussion during your previous student nurse experiences? Describe the similarities and/or differences to
those encounters.

I thought it was important to bring attention to retention and making efforts to recognize employees for their hard
work. So many are over worked and feeling under appreciated. It seems as if units are losing nurses and I feel it is
important to figure out why and how to keep them.

This is the first meeting like this that I have attended that addresses a hospital wide issue. I have attended UBC
meeting on my unit.

Major similarities were that everyone was professional and give an opportunity to take part in the meeting by
offering input and answering questions.

Responding

Describe stresses (both positive & negative) you experienced as you responded to the new learning or the
challenge.

I did not experience any negatives during this meeting. I felt welcomed and did not find any challenges.

What role would you take being assigned to represent your unit in this group? What subcommittee would
you like to participate with and why?

In the past, I have been on the falls committee on my unit. I would like to involve myself in this committee at our
hospital in the future. I feel that patient safety is a matter of importance. Working on a Neuroscience unit, we
encounter patient falls. I want to be a part of educating staff and keeping our patients safe and free from falls.

What is the value of professional nursing meetings both as a part of a healthcare system and within a
professional organization?
These meeting are of value because they assist us in advocating for our patients and help promote patient safety.
They draw attention to problems in the healthcare community that improvement: e.g. patient falls, infections.
Professional meetings emphasis practices to better our workflow as we come together and share ideas, ways to
improve healthcare and provided an avenue for self-motivation and implementation in practice.
Describe any changes in your values or feelings as a result of this experience.

When I first learned of professional meetings, my first thought was, “not more meetings!” I “pre-judged” something
I knew nothing about. Since then, I have attended unit meeting on our floor and been involved on the “falls

committee” on our unit. I found these meetings to be informative, transformative and productive. Professional
meeting center around evidence-based practice and give us an opportunity to put incorporate them into our daily
partake to keep our patients safe.
