2470 ME 7.8 Motronic Control Unit (DME)

The modified data record of the Motronic control unit contributes to the
significant power and torque increase. In addition, an increase in the
maximum speed has been acheived by raising the governed speed in
6th gear by 50 rpm to 6,800 rpm. Gear recognition takes place through
a map in the Motronic control unit, which calculates the selected gear
from the vehicle speed (from the ABS control unit) and the engine
speed.

From model year 2004, the following data records with modified maps
will be available for programming the Motronic control unit of the 911
GT2: LEV, EU3, JAP/AUS, M150.

As with the previous 911 GT2, Model Year 2003, a special program-
ming code must be issued to program the control unit of the 2004

911 911
Aerodynamics and Air Ducting

Besides outstanding aerodynamics, high performance and low fuel

consumption, a very high level of driving safety is also acheived. The
result of aerodynamic development is an low coefficient of drag of 0.30
for the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 0.31 for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

With the low lift coefficient of 0.05 on the front axle and 0.07 on the
rear axle, the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet completely fulfills all the require-
ments for balanced driving dynamics. With these attributes, safe drive-
ability is achieved even at high speeds. In comparison to the 911
Carrera 4S Cabriolet, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet delivers even higher
performance. Accordingly, the aerodynamic demands are also higher
here.

The exemplary axle lift coefficients of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet are front
0.03 and rear 0.03. In particular, the combination of low coefficient of
drag and low total lift (lift coefficient = 0.06) highlights the outstanding
aerodynamic quality and provides that noticeable plus in driving safety.

A continuously falling “fastback” roof contour without disruptive cross

rail edges, almost seamless transition from side windows to soft top,
and a harmonic side insertion of the soft top in the C-pillar area all
contribute to the low coefficient of drag and the reduced rear axle lift
when combined with the extending rear spoiler of the 911 Carrera 4S
Cabriolet or with the split wing of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

As with the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, great value was
also placed on a low blow-up tendency on the soft tops of the 911
Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet. The soft top design,
optimized through extensive wind-tunnel testing, has ideal cross rail
positioning, soft top tension and material bonding onto the soft top
frame, which results in outstandingly low blow-up tendencies even at the
highest speeds.

Bodyshell

The bodyshells of the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo

Cabriolet have, in comparison to all other 911 models, additional sill
reinforcement front and rear. The front sill reinforcement forms part of
the floor assembly and stiffens the joint area between sill and bodyshell
in the front area of the door cutouts. The rear sill reinforcement forms
part of the inner side sections and stiffens the joint area between sill
and bodyshell in the rear area of the door cutouts.

Page 5.4
5.8 / 2004
Section5.qxd 1/25/04 9:55 AM Page 5

Additionally, there are high-strength tube reinforcements in the A-pillars, 911

which have been taken directly from the 911 Carrera Cabriolet models 911
as part of the roll-over protection system.

5_17_04

Because of the cabriolet-specific retractable rear side windows and the

strength requirements, the bodyshell has to be completely revised and
strengthened in the upper area behind the door cutouts (B-pillar) due to
space considerations. In particular, the space requirements for the
retractable rear side windows and the ducting in this area for the charge
air intercooler of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

5_14_04

Page 5.5
5.9 / 2004
Section5.qxd 1/25/04 9:55 AM Page 6

911 The high-strength steel (DP600) has been used for the first time on
911 Porsche sports cars in the area of the newly designed channel reinforce-
ments inside and out. The bonding used on the reinforcement also
results in increased energy absorption in the event of a crash. This
design has also resulted in a weight reduction in comparison with the
911 Carrera Cabriolet and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet.

5_16_04

The typical wide bodies of the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo
Cabriolet are created through the reworking of the body side sections of
the respective Coupé variants. This has required extensive chopping and
re-shaping to create a different joint contour between side sections and
cabrio compartment cover in comparison with the 911 Carrera
Cabriolet models.

This measure consequently required modification or re-design of the two

cross members in the soft top shelf. The cross section loss of the cross
member structure due to space reasons in comparison with the 911
Cabriolet could be compensated for by the appropriate positioning of
the new front cross member.

Collectively, the bodyshell modifications on the 911 Carrera 4S

Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet bodies has resulted in approx. 4.5%
higher torsional rigidity in comparison with the 911 Carrera Cabriolet
models. The bending strength has been increased by approx. 3%.

Page 5.6 5.10 / 2004

Section5.qxd 1/25/04 9:55 AM Page 7

The bodyshells of the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo 911
Cabriolet only differ from each other, as on the Coupé models, in the 911
turbo-specific features:

• Outer wheel arch with installation opening for the charge air channels
• Cross member in rear end section with integral bodyshell engine
mounting
• The interior rear wall is adapted to the space requirement of the
engine oil tank of the dry sump lubrification system

The high body rigidity enables very sensitive and yet sporty tuning of the
chassis and suspension. Additionally, by minimizing the torsional flexing
and body shake due to uneven road surfaces such as expansion joints in
highways, a higher quality impression is also acheived on the 911
Carrera 4S and 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

5590 Engine Compartment Lid

The 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet engine compartment lid is a new design.

As with the 911 Carrera 4S Coupé, the engine compartment lid is made
from glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP). It consists of an inner and outer
shell, which are manufactured in two separate SMC (sheet molding 5_11_04
compound) presses and subsequently bonded together.

To match the dimensions of the rear side sections and soft top compart-
ment cover, the engine compartment lid of the 911 Carrera 4S
Cabriolet (compared to the 911 Carrera 4S Coupé) had to be length-
ened by approx. 40 mm. The larger engine compartment opening
equates to that of the 911 Turbo or 911 Turbo Cabriolet. The rear
spoiler, along with the characteristic 911 Carrera 4S light strip between
the rear lights, has been taken without modification directly from the
Coupé.

5_10_04

The engine compartment lid of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet is basically the
same as the 911 Turbo Coupé with only a slight modification to optimize
the joint pattern in the upper area.

911 61 Cabriolet Top

911
The proven fully-automatic soft top of the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and
911 Turbo Cabriolet is adapted from the 911 Carrera Cabriolet models.

As with the 911 Carrera Cabriolet models from Model Year 2003,
actuation is possible while the vehicle is moving up to 30 mph (50 kph).

6_19_04

Detailed improvements such as an additional seam in the soft top

tensioning strap or an additional piping bead (plastic profiled band) on
the retaining strip of the roof lining already introduced as model update
during spring of current Model Year 2003 have also been used on the
911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet. These measures
minimize the extremely slight existing tendency of the soft top to blow-
up at higher speeds, in particular on the 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

Page 6.4 6.8 / 2004

Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 5

The soft top is in three sections and in its stowed position only takes up 911
a small space of approx. 140 mm in height due to its ingenious mechan- 911
ical kinematics (Z-folding).

6_13_04

The overlapping movement process of soft top and soft top compart-
ment cover also results in extremely short soft top opening and closing
times. These are around 20 seconds on the new 911 Carrera 4S
Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet. When actuating the soft top at the
maximum permissible speed of 30 mph (50 kph), this time can increase
to around 26 seconds when closing the soft top due to the higher air
resistance and consequential movement resistance.

The Porsche 911 Cabriolet has a fully automatic, three-section folding

convertible top with patented Porsche technology which has been used
in Porsche vehicles since introduction of the 1997 Boxster. The convert-
ible top is stowed in the convertible top compartment using the new “Z- 6_12_04
fold” method such that the convertible top’s outer surface when folded
forms an outer surface when opened. In contrast to conventional
convertible top mechanisms where the inner side is folded to face
outwards, the advantage of the Z-fold is firstly that the convertible top
protects itself against soiling when open and secondly that the convert-
ible top has a low storage height.

Page 6.5
6.9 / 2004
Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 6

911 Special mention should also be made of the attractive appearance of

911 the opened convertible top which perfectly blends in with the shape of
the body. Optimum positive engagement between the windshield frame
and convertible top is provided at a total of three points, i.e. the electric
central lock-ing mechanism in the middle as well as additional pins at the
side. For the observer, the opening and closing process is very harmo-
nious because the convertible top is moved backwards uniformly without
any considerable change to the side contours of the vehicle.

The convertible top compartment lid is opened and closed simultane-

ously to the motion of the convertible top (and also provides the opened
convertible top with additional protection) especially contributes to the
harmonious overall impression of the opening and closing process.

The timing of the two movement processes is controlled electrically.

This is made possible by a special control unit as well as the position
and guiding of the convertible top compartment lid which, instead of
folding upwards, moves backwards parallel to the direction of travel thus
clearing the convertible top compartment.

For safety considerations, the windows are not automatically closed

together with the soft top when actuated via the convenient remote
control and via the door lock.

Operating the Cabriolet Top

To open the convertible top, the user simply has to press the operating
button in the center console. Locking is also performed fully automati-
cally. The convertible top can only be operated if the ignition is switched
on.

Alternatively, a convenient feature allows the convertible top to be

operated by holding the ignition key in the door lock. The vehicle is first
unlocked or locked before the convertible top mechanism is actuated. In
this case, the ignition and the position of the handbrake are irrelevant.

Cabriolet Top Construction

The frame of the soft top is made up of just ten main components, of
which 26% are aluminum and 20% are magnesium. The pivot points are
predominantly of the forked type, which contribute significantly to the
high stability of this soft top design. The high-quality appearance of the
soft top exterior is considerably defined by the visible styling edges.
Consequently, the combination of the high-quality soft top cover
together with typical Porsche styling elements has created a marque-
specific look.

Page 6.6
6.10 / 2004
Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 7

The fabric outer cover of the soft top is highly durable and its UV light 911
stability protects it from fading. 911

The rear window consists of solid glass and is heated. This solid glass
panel was first introduced on the 911 Carrera Cabriolet model in 2001
and has since then replaced the plastic rear window. The significantly
improved vision to the rear gained through the solid glass rear window
is most noticeable in winter and inclement weather periods. A further
benefit is the increased resistance to wear due to environmental influ-
ences.

6_17_04

The solid glass rear window is made from 3.15 mm thick single-layer
safety glass and is connected to the soft top via an exchange system.
This ability to exchange the window panel (without replacing the entire
soft top cover) allows for lower replacment costs.

The overall high-quality impression of the soft top is achieved in the

interior through the high-quality soft top interior lining in black fabric, the
complete trim of the soft top frame, the good interior acoustics and low
outside wind noise.

61 Hard Top

The 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet come equipped
with a hard top as standard. This increases the practical value and the
day-to-day suitability of the vehicle. The styling of the hard top when
installed follows the contours of the entire vehicle thereby accentuating
the individual character of Cabriolet body.

Page 6.7
6.11 / 2004
Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 8

911 911 Years of experience on the 911 Carrera Cabriolet and 911 Carrera 4
Cabriolet (type 996) and the associated development of the gap toler-
ances and joint contours has meant that on the the 911 Carrera 4S
Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet, the gap between the fitted hard top
and soft top compartment cover and rear side section could be reduced
from 8 mm to 6mm. This increases the overall high-quality impression of
the new Cabriolet models. This has been achieved while retaining the
position of the hard top through the new design and shaping of the soft
top compartment cover along with a modified cut of the rear side
sections.

The hard top, in high-strength aluminum alloy, provides high optical

quality, as well as safety and lightweight design. The innovative,
material-friendly, self-piercing rivet construction principle is the jointing
technology used in the production of the aluminum hard top, during
which, unlike welding, no heat is applied to the component. This
achieves a non-warping joint seam with a consistent strength. The result
of this elaborate technology is very light 33 kg component that can be
effortlessly fitted by two persons.

After installation, the hard top is secured by a manually-operated central

locking catch on the windshield frame. At the rear, a tool is supplied to
lock the two bayonet catches at the sides. When the hard top is
installed, the electrical contacts integrated in these bayonet catches
automatically establish the power supply to the heated rear window,
making the process highly convenient and winter suitable. The installed
hard top is detected by the soft top control as the front central locking
catch locks. A subsequent soft top actuation, which could damage the
soft top or hard top, is thereby prevented.

6_09_04

6.12 / 2004

Page 6.8
Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 9

The inside of the hard top is lined with highly noise-insulating black 911
fabric, which is also used as soft top interior lining. The colors of the 911
plastic trim (e.g. lateral roof frame trim) are matched to the interior of
the vehicle. The front central locking catch is concealed with a plastic
cover. Furthermore, the hard top is provided with two standard inte-
grated coat hooks.

6190 Cabriolet Top Compartment Cover

The wider body at the rear end compared to the 911 Carrera Cabriolet
models required a new soft top compartment cover. They differ from
each other through the third brake light. On the 911 Carrera 4S
Cabriolet, this is in the soft top compartment cover and on the 911
Turbo Cabriolet, as on the 911 Turbo Coupé, it is integrated in the fixed
part of the split wing.

With the discontinuation of the “Roof rack system”, accessory program

the rear fastening points and the associated body covers in the front of
the soft top compartment cover on the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and
911 Turbo Cabriolet were also discontinued. These have been replaced
by an elongation of the respective soft top compartment cover.

6_18_04

6475 Rear Side Window

As with the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, the 911 Carrera
4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet also have fully lowering rear side
windows. Operation is via switches located centrally in the center
console. The rear side windows can be fully lowered when the soft top is
closed. When the soft top is open, a safety control keeps the rear side
windows always open to protect from damage.

Page 6.9
6.13 / 2004
Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 10

911 911
The shape of the rear side windows and the respective electric window
mechanism had to be optimized for the turbo-specific wheel arches to
make space for the charge air intercooler ducting. These changes have
been incorporated in all 911 Cabriolets and were introduced as model
update in spring 2003.

Air Ducting for Cooling Air (only 911 Turbo Cabriolet)

To allow full lowering of the rear side windows, the charge air intercooler
ducting also had to be modified. The necessary clearance between the
rear window mechanism and the charge air intercooler ducting was
achieved by trimming the charge air intercooler ducting at the front and
sealing the extra clearance opening with covers which are adhered in
place for an air tight seal.

6_14_04

6847 Wind Deflector

The standard wind deflector of the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911
Turbo Cabriolet is the same as the optionally available wind deflector of
the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet models. This was
developed in the wind tunnel and ensures pleasant and low-turbulence
driving. It consists of two frames containing net fabric and when
installed enhances the elegant appearance of the Cabriolet.

The wind deflector covers the space between the front seats and the
cover of the roll bar, which produces a flowing, roadster-like line along
6_15_04
the entire vehicle. The wind deflector can be removed in a few simple
operations and, thanks to its double folding mechanism, is easily stowed
in the trunk.

Page 6.10 6.14 / 2004

Section6.qxd 1/25/04 10:04 AM Page 11

69 Airbag 911
911
Of course, the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet also
have fullsize airbags for driver and front passenger, as well as the side
airbag system POSIP (Porsche side impact protection system). As is
known, this consists of a side airbag and an energy-absorbing door
panel. Therefore, in a side impact, this system protects both the chest
and the head, even with the vehicle open.

6_10_04

The airbag module accommodated in the door panel contains a rela-

tively large 30 liter airbag, which is effective throughout the entire seat
adjustment range and provides addition protection particularly in the
head area.

6972 Extending Roll-over Protection

To increase occupant protection in the event of a roll-over, the 911

Carrera 4S Cabriolet and 911 Turbo Cabriolet, as all 911 Cabriolet
models (type 996), have an automatically extending roll-over protection
system as standard.

911
911

6_11_04

When necessary, a centrally arranged roll-over sensor triggers two roll

bars in a fraction of a second. The sensor detects inclinations and
accelerations around the vehicle's longitudinal and lateral axes, as well
as the practically weightless state in the event of losing road surface
contact. Actuators then release a locking latch, which allows the spring-
loaded roll bar to extend. This fully diagnosis-capable system constantly
monitors the functionality of all sensors and actuators. If a system fault
occurs, this is visually displayed by a warning light in the instrument unit.
