CREATING YOUR IDEAL LIFESTYLE IN RETIREMENT

1. Based on family history, how many years do you think you have left? Remember, you
can’t enjoy a golden, care-free retirement unless you protect yourself from the ravages
of poor health, mental stagnation or premature death.

2. What work has been done to financially insure those years? That way, if you run out of
income-producing years before you have fully funded your retirement; your financial
legacy will not perish together with your physical presence. Specifically, how many
paydays do you have left until retirement? At that point, you’ll stop working for your
money and your money needs to go to work for you.

3. What lessons have you learned from the retirement of others? Consider emulating the
actions of role models and mentors who shaped your own character and subsequent
success in life. Where and how might you duplicate or magnify their efforts in making
a difference during your retirement years instead of just making a tee-off time?

4. Describe a typical day in your retirement? Make a commitment to having a daily planned
schedule of activity (whether that’s learning to play competitive bridge or taking a Thai
cooking class or completing your first 10k race)– it brings clarity and substance to your
waking hours.
5. Draw up a “bucket list” of the 10 places/countries you wish to visit in your retirement.

6. Where do you want to live when you retire and what kinds of friendships do you wish
to foster and cherish in retirement?

7. What charity or cause do you admire the most? How can your vast experience and
social network contribute in securing their work for generations to come? Would you
consider leveraging a few hours a week to helping those less fortunate than yourself?

8. What do you feel is the greatest good that can come from your own wealth? Which
of your values could be perpetuated among your kids/grandkids through funding in
your own retirement or estate planning?

9. What legacy do you want to leave behind? More specifically, what do you want to be
remembered for having “gotten done” at a local level (your old school, church or
community group) through your volunteerism or financial influence?
10. What plans have you made to pass along your wisdom, not just your wealth? Which
community leadership group could benefit massively from just a few hours each month
of your presence on their board or in their executive activities?

11. What treasured experience would you like buy for physically or mentally disadvantaged
citizens in your community with your first free R 100 000 of excess retirement funding –
or by leaving behind a R1 000,000 policy that is owned by your favourite community
group?

12. What number do you have in mind to leave behind in your estate for your family and
what life do you picture buying them with that number? Have you consulted the
appropriate qualified specialists to secure that number through tax-efficient structures?
How do you want to be remembered by your family immediately after you are deceased?
Be specific here – “I want to fund a 7-day cruise for my extended family within 3 months
of my funeral as a celebration of my life and ask each family member to share their
fondest + funniest memories of my life at a special dinner on the first night of the cruise”
