ABOUT THE BOOK

The present market is being flooded with Homoeopathic books. Yet it is expected that
this booklet shall have its need and importance.

The general public harps on his malady. He has no importance for his mental symptoms,
modalities or time of aggravation. The physician is too busy to spare any time in questioning
at random. He, therefore, takes recourse to Biochemy. This is alarming and must be
discouraged.

To help him, he must have some "Pointers" that will suggest him one or two medicines.
Slipshod practice will not do. Kent says, "Nux Vomica is given as a routine remedy for
loss of appetite, it will increase the appetite but do dangerous work to the patient."

The suggested medicine has then to be confirmed by "Modalities" to get the totality. Kent
has again said, "Suppose the patient always avoided warm things and much clothing and
wanted the cold open air, and still have a dozen key-notes, you would find every time that
Calcarea would fail."

Lastly, the most important thing for the prescriber is to be thoroughly acquainted with the
"Comparison," the fine distinction between two medicines having a common group of
symptoms. For example, both Sabina and Pulsatilla have aggravation from warm air and
in a warm room and amelioration in the open fresh air and profuse menstrual flow.
However, you cannot give Pulsatilla for it will increase the flow.

Thus this booklet has been - divided into three parts— pointers, modalities and comparison,
which will help the prescriber to select the correct Homoeopathic medicine instead of taking
recourse to Biochemy.

6 CHAPTER 1 POINTERS TO HOMEOPATHIC DRUGS

ABOUT THE CHAPTER

A homoeopath has to depend on symptoms to treat his patients. The Indian patient, however,
hardly gives out his symptoms except that he has headache, cough, sciatica, and so on. What
causes aggravation or amelioration? He says he has not noted that. What time is the trouble
greatest? He says it is always the same. Is he a chilly or hot patient? He says he is chilly in
winter and hot in the summer. Thus the physician has to depend mostly on what he himself
observes.

He sees a child crying and whining and quietened only on being carried in the arms; the child
objects to being touched or looked at; a fat and flabby child-eating chalk or earth; a cold and
dying patient constantly being fanned on the face; a patient suffering from eczema exuding
thick honey-like gluey liquid; another suffering from vertigo or nausea the moment he raises
his head from the pillow or a child crying piteously from earache. In such eases, his first
thought comes over Chamomilla. Antim. Crud., Calcarea carb., Carbo veg., Graphites.
Bryonia or Pulsatilla respectively and he soon confirms his choice through a few pointed
questions.

The object of this Chapter is to supply to the busy homoeopath such essential pointers and
means of confirmation as will help him in the correct choice of medicine in the quickest
possible time.

CHAPTER 2
24 CHAPTER 2  MODALITIES OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES

ABOUT THE CHAPTER

Modality means those conditions on which the symptoms of a drug are aggravated and
ameliorated.

It is an essential part of Homoeopathic prescribing. The busy prescriber of today selects

his medicine on the name of the malady and one or two symptoms. He has no time to ask
for the modalities. The patient too generally does not help him in this respect. He does
not observe whether his pain is relieved by heat or cold, by covering or uncovering, by
pressure or otherwise, by movement or rest etc. The result is generally a failure.

Kent has said, "Suppose the patient always avoided warm things and much clothing and
wanted the cold open air, and still had a dozen keynotes, you would find every time that
Calcarea would fail."

It is hoped that this little chapter will encourage the prescriber and through him his
patient not to overlook the modalities.

CHAPTER 3
46 CHAPTER 3  COMPARISON OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES

ABOUT THE CHAPTER

Homoeopathy is a settle science with remedies looking very similar but with fine
distinctions. Unless these are mastered or are available at fingers end there is bound
to be confusion and consequently failure. The blame unfortunately goes to
Homoeopathy and not to the prescriber, Hahnemann' s rule of ‘Perfect similimum’ has
never failed.

It is hoped that this little chapter will prove useful in the hands of the prescriber
especially those who are beginners.

Numbers in the margin refer to Leaders in Homoeopathic Therapeutics by E.B. Nash
