The Self and the Development of the Social World
Most often, we think the human persons are just passive actors in the whole
process of the shaping of selves. That men and women are born with particularities
that they can no longer change. Recent studies, however, indicate that men and
women in their growth and development engage actively in the shaping of the self.
The unending terrain of metamorphosis of the self is mediated by language.
“Language as both publicly shared and privately utilized symbol system is the site
where the individual and the social make and remake each other” by Schwartz, White,
and Lutz 1993. Development of the self in society includes the development of skills
to enable students to make decisions for personal, social, intellectual, physical,
emotional, and spiritual health. Increasingly students are asked to sift through and
make meaning of vast quantities of information. It is important to understand that our
upbringing and the social interactions around us molds us into the individuals we are
today. Our interactions with people around us can also be factors that shape our
attitudes towards the people and it affects our development in our professional lives.
Overall, we as human beings are not perfect and we can only be the best we can be by
making the best out of our situations in the development of the Social World to be
successful in life.
