Support for all Learners

Students come into the classroom at di erent levels of knowledge. In some cases, the skill levels are

not quite close enough to teach one speci c type of lesson. In previous years teaching 7th and 8th

grade English Language Arts, I’ve had students in my classroom with a reading level as low as

second grade mixed with students that are at grade level and beyond. This makes it a bit

challenging to reach every student with one lesson tailored towards at grade level students.

Successfully, I have implemented a station rotation where students are receiving lessons tailored to

their learning abilities. These groups are implemented by analyzing testing data and determining

which group the student should rotate with by their levels. Students that are above grade level and

at grade level are grouped together while below grade level students may be part of separate groups

depending on how many students and to what degree their abilities are similar.

These rotations allow me to see the students that I need to see for more time. In previous years, I’ve

had students that have tested beyond grade level. These students are perfect candidates for an

independent study. In most cases with an independent study, the teacher only needs to check in with

them for a small amount of time each class period which allows more time to focus on the below

grade level students. Students who are not part of an independent study are provided a leveled text

that I facilitate when they reach their rotation with me.

Working with the teacher is just one rotation. In order to provide students with the opportunity to

be successful at their level, there is another rotation that allows them to choose an independent

reading book that is at or just slightly above their reading level that they rotate through. During

this rotation, the student gets to read at their own pace and work on reading skills that every

student in the class focuses on regardless of reading level.

I always try to provide a rotation that has students work with technology. In some years, I’ve had a

curriculum that students work through online that’s tailored to their needs, and in other years I’ve

had to utilize technology by creating something for them that will successfully bene t them during
that rotation. While I don’t believe that technology should take place of regular lessons, it’s

important for students to continuously utilize it due to the high demand of technology being used in

high school and beyond.
