German Inflation Activity Directions

Process: You and your partner will plan a family

budget over the span of five months (September,
1922 to January, 1923). Your occupation will be
chosen at random.

During this activity, EACH MONTH you MUST:

• PAY RENT EVERY MONTH

• BUY A MINIMUM OF ONE ITEM FROM EACH OF

THE SIX FOOD GROUPS (and chocolate & bread
no matter what). (Retired couples and single
adults pay only ½ of ALL food prices)

• BUY ONE WINTER COAT for EACH of you (ONE

TIME ONLY) SOMETIME DURING THE ACTIVITY.

• Buy one set of school supplies (ONE TIME

ONLY). (Retired couples and single adults DO
NOT have to do this)

• PAY FOR “FATE” WHENEVER IT OCCURS. (Fate

represents any unexpected expenses such as
medical, family emergencies, repairs, clothing,
etc.)

• Everything else: optional
