How do smart grids differ from the current electricity infrastructure in the
United States?
Ans:
Smart grid provides the electricity Current electricity infrastructure is
from suppliers to consumers with the outdates in the Unites States of
help of digital technology in order to America as it provides vey few ways to
increase the reliability and handle power provided by different
transparency. Morover smart grid is resources. Also it is more costly and
also cost efficient and save energy losses are more common in this
considerable amount of energy. infrastructure.
Both consumers and suppliers are Current system provides no
able to make intelligent decision in information about energy
smart grid system as far as energy consumption. Hence consumers and
consumption and production is suppliers are unable to make efficient
concerned. decision.

Smart grid provide information to help Current systems is not able to provide
utilities in adjusting the price according this feature.
to the market demand
Smart Grid help consumers to program Consumers are unable to program
electrical appliances in Peak Hours electrical appliances in peak hours.

What management, organization, and technology issues should be considered

when developing a smart grid?
Ans:
Following are the some important issues that should be considered when
developing a small grid
Management:
Information in the form of feedback is required for the consumers for the efficient
use of the energy. Hence grid should be developed in such a way that provide
usage information to the consumer .Dashboard monitoring system is the best
choice for meeting this issue.

Organization:
For organization . there might be the condition that operation budget would be
severely impacted due to the less energy consumption by the consumers due to
smart grids. Hence smart grid should meet the requirements of business model of
organization.
Technology:
Another issue in the smart grid is the retrofitting of equipment related to the
power management , sensors and monitoring the consumption and production of
energy in smart grids , which is quite expensive. Hence Efficient use of technology
is required.

What challenge to the development of smart grids do you think is most likely to
hamper their development?
Ans
Following are the challenges in the development of smart grids
 Entire change in the electric grid in U.S.
 Installation of two way meters , that is quite time taking and expensive
process.
 High cost of retrofitting in the entire U.S.
 Economic impact in the companies.
 Perceived and real loss of privacy

What other areas of our infrastructure could benefit from ‘smart technologies?
Describe one example not listed in the case.
Ans:
Water usage in the community is the best example which can be upgraded by
Smart Technologies as with the increase of the population , need for the water is
increasing day by day so it is necessary to monitor
 Use of the water in homes as well as in business area.
 Water capacity in dams and other
 Monitoring of evaporation rates

 Monitoring of clean and dirty water to derive ways for reducing water
pollution.

Would you like your home and your community to be part of a smart grid? Why
or why not? Explain
Ans
Yes, I like my home and community to be the part of smart grid because it would
benefit us in making efficient decisions in the usage of energy. Also it would save
energy and reduce the consumers bills. Also it would help the community to
program appliances in the peak hours.
