QUES 3 – SOURCES OF POWER

(XO LIEUTENANT HUNTER)

Authentic Power:
This is a structured relationship-based system of authority and power. Hunter was the Captain's second-
in-command, and as a result of his role, he had a lot of power. Hunter, on the other hand, was a Harvard
graduate who had been well-trained and was recruited for the same job. He is cautious and knows how to
respond diplomatically while keeping his cool, as shown by his gracious response to the captain that he
would not have been on the cruise if he thought the Hiroshima bombing was a mistake. He also threatens
to fire Ramsey, showing his "Coercive" authority.

Relationships Network:
Hunter possessed a high EQ, and he learned how to better exploit people's emotions in order to form
bonds, win them over, and complete tasks. This is clear when he converses with the Radio Officer in
words he is familiar with. Officer has been likened to Scotty, as well as Kirk (from Star Trek). Ramsey
used his reasoning and inspiration to convince them as they were locked up after regaining custody. When
Cobbs was only partially convinced, Hunter encouraged him and the rest of the party by saying, "A small
well-trained army will wreak havoc!"

Individual Effort:
By using his ability to listen well, having a strong work ethic, and sound analytical skills, he first won
over other managers and Ramsey. He took his time getting to know the Captain, and he's not reacting to
Ramsey's overtly racist and misogynistic jokes. For example, when Ramsey said that White horses were
superior to Arab horses because of their colour, Hunter said nothing, and Captain even admits that Hunter
was observant and responsive, saying, "knew to shut up and enjoy the View."

Denotational Power:
This refers to the ability to entice people to follow you by exhibiting personality traits like leading by
example. These leaders and their supporters have a close connection.
We saw this when there was a fire in the kitchen, and despite being in the middle of his duties, he
personally attended to it and made sure the situation was handled properly. Hunter was also hesitant to
close the hatch to keep the boat from sinking because he wanted to make sure that all of his men were
safe, showing his concern for their well-being.
Information’s Influence:
Hunter went on to say that after they were captured by Ramsey, it was the Navy rules and regulations that
motivated Cobb to act in a certain way because of Hunter's rank.
